North Sligo water supply to be a priority
IRISH Water will include the North Sligo water supply in their national water resources plan, making it a priority area.
Sinn Féin Councillor Thomas Healy made representations to Irish Water about the issue with water supply in areas of north Sligo.
He said: “Vast areas of north Sligo from Grange through to Ballintrillick, Cliffoney and surrounding areas are dependent on the Gortnaleck and Lyle streams in the Luke’s Bridge area, this is a precarious supply very vulnerable to drought and has only been kept going due to the extraordinary work of Council workers.
“In response to my last motion on Monday Irish Water have now confirmed that they recognise the special problems with the north Sligo water supply and have included it under their National Water Resources Plan.
“This plan covers water supply needs for the next 25 years and means that this is now a priority area. In the short term I will be liaising with Irish Water to find a mechanism to manage the supply to these areas.
“We do, however, need to find a permanent solution in the form of major infrastructural investment to ensure the supply of water into the future.”
