Sligo could get new bus shelters by end of 2020
DUE to the impact of Covid-19, it is likely to be late 2020 before the first of proposed new bus shelters for Sligo are installed.
The National Transport Authority is working closely with Sligo County Council on the development of a multi-annual bus shelter programme for County Sligo, including Sligo Town.
Earlier this year Sligo County Council prepared a detailed list of possible bus shelter locations for consideration. Preparation of this “longlist” was undertaken in consultation with local public representatives, the NTA and Bus Éireann.
The next stage in the process involves technical surveys of the footpaths at these locations to ensure that they can accommodate bus shelters. While some of this work has started the overall survey programme has been disrupted by the Covid-19 public health emergency. Once those surveys have been completed Sligo County Council will conduct road safety audits where necessary and a final list of agreed locations (“the shortlist”) will be prepared.
The council will then seek tenders from contractors to undertake any bus shelter enabling and remedial works which may be required in order to facilitate the installation of the bus shelters by the NTA’s bus shelter contractor.
The costs of any remedial works to footpaths and the installation of the bus shelters will be borne by the NTA.
News of progress on the issue has been welcomed by Cllr Marie Casserly who has been lobbying on the issue for some time now.
