THE outpouring of support and goodwill towards our frontline workers in the wake of Covid-19 was necessary and entirely justified.
Our nurses, doctors and anyone in the healthcare profession always go above and beyond the call of duty to deliver the best possible care and attention required, often in difficult circumstances. The efficiency and manner in which our healthcare workers conducted their day-to-day business in hospitals and other care settings during the pandemic was greatly complicated and made more difficult by the coronavirus; yet they carried out their duties with customary professionalism.
Our other obvious frontline workers too, such as An Garda Siochana, went about their business in keeping communities safe and indeed helped out as needed where required in assisting vulnerable members of communities.
However, we are keen to underline, and to acknowledge, the remarkable contribution of frontline workers who, while maybe not on the immediate frontline and not to the forefront, made an equally valuable contribution to society over the course of the last number of months.
These include our shop owners and assistants, who kept shelves stocked, supplies moving and some semblance of normality in communities. In staying open, and remaining so efficient, our shop assistants and owners displayed remarkable commitment to keep their stores functioning in order to meet the needs of communities.
Similarly, our pharmacies provided medical supplies to local areas at a critical time; our postmen continued to deliver important items to our door, as did many courier companies; butchers worked under different and challenging circumstances and generally across the retail sector staff took on the responsibility and made sure everything worked seamlessly.
It is important we acknowledge the effort of so many frontline staff, across all industries and sectors, for helping society through one of the most challenging periods of the last century.
