THE U11 boys from Benbulben FC didn’t let the Covid-19 lockdown get in the way of their training, as they took part in a virtual home skills competition as they could not train together.

The U11 coaches had some fun with zoom meetings to get the lads back training during the lock down, they came up with a 5 week World Cup skills competition. The competition was set as a World Cup template with all 20 players getting the same drill which changed every week and got more difficult as the weeks went on. Every player that took part got an easter egg and medal.

The first challenge was toe taps, all players had a week to practice before sending in their best efforts by video which had to be submitted the following Thursday evening, the challenge lasted for 30 seconds.

Some fantastic results came in with players knocking three toe taps per second.

Week two’s challenge was tick tocks yet again some great scores came in, coaches had a difficult time counting these, and the kids were fast. Videos had to be done in slow motion to get the right results, with some close scoring coming in, the videos had to be watched a few times from each coach.

Week three saw 16 players going through to the knock out stage, eight players in the cup and eight players in the shield, the next challenge was keepy uppies. They were now down to the last 8 in week 4 to see who goes through to the finals,

Ryan Lang took on Matthew Gillen with Darragh ó Sullivan up against Jack Mc Gowan in the cup finals, the shield finals places saw Matthew Brennan up against Dylan Murphy and Pauric Mc Sharry against Charlie Joe Fagan, the task for this week was a right and left foot wall pass around a cone with players getting as many touches in 30 seconds as they could.

In week 5 they were into the finals and the challenge for the finals was a race which involved sprinting, dribbling and shooting. Hunting for the big first prize in the cup, Matthew Gillen took on his good friend Darragh ó Sullivan with Ryan Lang up against Jack Mc Gowan for the 3rd and 4th place playoff. In the shield 1st and 2nd place final Matthew Brennan took on Dylan Murphy with Pauric Mc Sharry and Charlie Joe Fagan fighting for 3rd and 4th.
