A Heath & Wellbeing promotion video organised by Sligo GAA officers was viewed over 3000 times on Sligo GAA’s different social media outlets.

Cathal Martyn, Youth Officer, Games Manager Liam Óg Gormley, his team, Coaching Officer Peadar Niland and Health & Wellbeing Officer Trevor Coen were the team behind the initiative which was aimed at young people during lockdown.

They also ran a Health & Wellbeing Connect Week in June. Cathal explained to The Sligo Champion that the response has been really good.

A survey they conducted within the 15 to 20 years age bracket found that 60% openly admit to finding life difficult to deal with at the moment.

Cathal said that the Health & Wellbeing promotion video has been viewed over 3000 times.

“We managed to reach into every home in Sligo via our GAA communications network. Sligo County Board has the distinction of being the only board in the Country to have actively checked in on its youth during these unprecedented times. We are now encouraging our members to continue the good work brought about by Check in week.

“One thing I noticed during this campaign is the reluctance among adults to discuss Well being issues.

“This campaign has also helped some to address these fears,” he added.

Meanwhile, a Mental Skills & Wellbeing Webinar organised by Sligo GAA Coaching and Games also had a huge and very positive response.

Kevin McDonnell, the 2018 Sligo senior football captain, Cathal Sheridan, former Sligo and Munster scrum half and current Mental Skills Coach with Munster and Director of Rugby at Bohemian UL and Jimmy Smith, Sligo GAA and LGFA Development Squad Mentor were all involved.

It went live on the Sligo GAA Coaching & Games YouTube channel one Sunday evening and the response was fantastic.

“Thanks very much to Kevin McDonnell, Cathal Sheridan and Jimmy

Smith for giving their time and expertise back to young players and coaches in Sligo GAA.

“Sligo men giving back!,” Sligo GAA said.

“Once again thanks to Darragh Cox and Louise Keane for putting the seminar together. Top job.”

Louise Keane, Sligo GAA Performance Games Development Administrator, said that the Webinar is a great resource for people not just in Sligo but throughout the country.

The Webinar is still available to view on the Sligo GAA Coaching & Games YouTube channel.

The thought-provoking and informative initiative was very well received.

People were complimenting Sligo GAA for providing a thought-provoking and engaging mental skills and wellbeing Webinar.

The hour-long event is very much worth checking out with the informative and engaging participants.
