THE club was very saddened to learn of the death of Michael Donegan. Michael was an outstanding, skilful, fast and intelligent footballer playing for his native parish team, Templeboy. He was a member of the Sligo Vocational Schools team which reached the 1963 All-Ireland Final and in the same year he played Minor football for the county. Unfortunately, like many other fine footballers Michael emigrated at a young age and his talents were denied to club and county. We extend our deepest sympathy to Michael’s family, relatives and friends. We also extend our sympathy to the family, relatives and friends of the late Mary Kilgannon. Ar Dheis Dé go raibh siad.

ST MOLAISE GAELS

ANOTHER very busy week of activity concluded on Sunday with a brilliant 2-18 to 2-09 win for our intermediate men in the 2nd round of championship fixtures against Enniscrone/Kilglass in Connolly Park Collooney. A match winning contribution of 2-06 on his full championship debut from Jack Davitt deservedly gets the headlines but all twenty players who saw action deserve credit for their efforts overcoming two sendings off that saw the side play the last twenty minutes with only thirteen men. Liam Kennedy gave an outstanding performance at corner back and Evan Farrell and Jason Brennan also impressed while Niall McLoughlin in goals produced a brilliant point blank save at a crucial stage in the game. Joseph Keaney had the proverbial stormer at centrefield and in the second half was joined by his brother Daniel who contributed with a spectacular point. While Jack Davitt was the star in attack Alan McLoughlin also shone while the hardworking Keelan Waters and evergreen Mark Quinn also made significant contributions. ON Saturday our Junior A men put in a good display in going down to a 3-15 to 1-09 defeat to Owenmore Gaels in the 2nd round of the A Championship. The scoreline was harsh on Gaels who saw good individual performances from Diarmuid Gallagher, James Brennan and Cathal Herron. OUR Junior Ladies were defated by Shamrock Gaels on Sunday morning last in the 2nd round of fixtures in the C championship. ON Friday evening last our U12 Girls gave another great performance in defeating Calry/St Joseph’s by 21 scores to 10. This Friday they play St Johns in Cuilbeg.

CLOONACOOL had a good workman like victory over a spirited St. Mary’s side at the resplendent Sligo Centre of excellence on Sunday morning last In the Connacht Gold Junior A football championship. Played in ideal conditions under a hot sun and cloudless sky, the saffron and blue cranked up through the gears to take a lead they never subsequently surrendered early in the first half. Two well taken goals from talisman Hughie Marren after Eamon Flynn pointed a couple of early frees for the Town side paved the way to victory for the south Sligo side. Solid defending from Conor Gavigan, Oisín Grehan and Sean Carnahan was the order of the day up to the first water break. The black and red then came more into the game with some well taken points from the lively corner forward Conor O’Grady and the aforementioned Flynn. Goalkeeper David Lynch wing back Tom Gavin and midfielder Neil Smyth were always prominent for Mary’s, while Cloonacool kicked some delightful scores from Conor Prendergast from play and Marren from frees after good build up play by Rian Moylan who also tagged on a lovely point from an acute angle, Pauric Murtagh and Evander Brennan to leave the half time score 2-6 to 0-6 in favour of the winners. St. Mary’s closed the gap early in the second half adding width to their play and stretching the winner’s defence. As the game ebbed and flowed both sides upped it a gear to leave a good crowd fully engaged as the second water break arrived. On resumption both teams went forward at every opportunity and some wonderful scores resulted at both ends. However the more balanced southsiders put the game to bed with a length of the pitch move for Oisín Grehan to beat goalkeeper Lynch with a blistering shot to the net and a well taken ‘45 by Hughie Marren. This left the full time score Cloonacool 3-13 St. Mary’s 0-12. Hard triers for the Sligo townside along with those already mentioned were Michael Munnelly at midfield and Patrick Maher at centre half forward. Cloonacool were well served in the defence by goalkeeper Joe Neary, Fergus Leonard, Brian Towey and David Wynne. Evander Brennan was always to the fore in the middle of the field. While up front James Lawrence, Jack McIntyre, and Rian Moylan were always busy. Off the bench Ciaran McIntyre and Ronnie Leonard caught the eye. Referee Pat Normanly, (Report courtesy of Tom Towey).

ST MARY’S

THANKS to everyone for being patient and following the necessary procedures in relation to the coronavirus. While there are restrictions, training, matches and our Saturday morning coaching are still happening, and this is a great reflection on all involved. SATURDAY morning coaching is a central part of our Club and the introduction to Gaelic games for our youngest and newest Members. Again this year participation is impressive and while ages have to be split to different times, enough coaches are to available to handle the longer time involved and ensure the kids can enjoy themselves while practicing their skills. This week, St Mary’s is hosting the Cúl camps and good luck to all involved.

AT the other end of the age groups our senior men’s and ladies teams were in action over the weekend and had mixed fortunes. The men met a determined Drumcliffe/Rosses Point side who proved goals win games to take the contest by 2-13 to 0-10. The lads have a 2 week break before their next match against Shamrock Gaels. The ladies had a happier outcome in their must win match away to St Michaels. Our girls were in control from early in the game and while their hosts fought bravely, a well organised defence and positive forward play copper-fastened the necessary win by 7-13 to 3-12. Their final match is against Tourlestrane, with the winner earning a place in the Senior Championship final.

THE minor girls have their next match against Eoghan Rua at home this Tuesday and will go all out for the win following the heartbreak of their 1 point loss to Calry/St Joseph’s in their first Championship match. The U16 girls had a tough outing in their A Championship losing 2-08 to 7-14 to Drumcliffe/Rosses Point.

IN the boys section of Bord na nÓg, our U12’s A and C sides will next play on the 18th against Ballymote/Bunninadden and these matches will be in Kent Park. The U14’s welcome Geevagh St Michaels on this Thursday August 13th. The U16 squad had a big win over Drumcliffe/Rosses Point in Oxfield emerging victorious on a scoreline of 7-10 to 3-07. They are out again this Friday with a home tie against Owenmore Gaels. THE minor boys returned to winning ways after 2 frustrating 1 point losses with a comprehensive win last Wednesday over the combined Coolaney-Tubbercurry side. No time to rest as they must play again this Wednesday when they travel to take on Ballymote-Bunninadden.

GEEVAGH

DESPITE the fact that our minor boys & St Michael’s defeated Shamrock Gaels to make it three from three in the championship on Wednesday evening last, it was our U14 girls who again put in the performance of the week, defeating St Michael’s in a tight encounter. Played in ideal conditions, this was a full team performance from goalkeeper Laura O’Reilly to inside forward Leanne Egan. It was a goal from Leanne ¾ way through the second half that sealed victory for our girls. They lead at half time by 4 points, went 2 points down midway through the half, but to their credit they never gave up the ghost and were rewarded with a 6 point victory.

OUR u12 boys lead St Mary’s by 0.5 to 0.3 at half time in their game last Tuesday, but ultimately went down on a 0.8 to 0.5 scoreline. NEITHER senior ladies or senior men were in competitive action over the weekend. FRIDAY evening last proved a disappointing one for our club teams with our u12 girls going down to Shamrock Gaels and our U16 boys coming second best to Coolaney/ Mullinabreena.

OUR junior lads in two good performances during the week, going down to Drumcliffe/ Rosses Point on Bank Holiday Monday and again this time at home to Enniscrone.
