Community is praised
COUNCILLORS offered widespread praise for what was described as a ‘fantastic initiative’ involving the Achonry/Mullinabreena Community Enhancement Group.
The south Sligo community recently raised over €60000 to purchase an old pub in the area, with a view to turning it into a community hub in the years to come.
The money to buy the property was raised in a very short timeframe, and the effort, enthusiasm and foresight of the group attracted the praise of councillors at last week’s meeting of the Ballymote/Tubbercurry Municipal District.
Cathaoirleach Michael Clarke said he wanted to ‘pay tribute’ to the Achonry/Mullinabreena community on their efforts, and described it as a ‘fantastic initiative’. He said it was a way of keeping rural communities alive and they had shown the way for other areas in doing just that.
Cllr Dara Mulvey also complimented those involved, saying that it promises to be a ‘great facility’. Cllr Mulvey said he had the opportunity to visit the property recently, and they have purchased a structurally sound building which is also ideally located close to the new Knocknashee walk, which has been an outstanding success since it opened, he concluded.
Cllrs Gerard Mullaney and Martin Connolly also offered their support. In addition, Cllr Clarke as chair thanked all of the council’s outdoor staff for their efforts throughout the course of 2020 and wished them a Happy Christmas.
