RIVERSTOWN
WALKING CLUB
Shamrock Gaels will be starting up a walking club in January for men and women in conjunction with the Irish Heart Foundation and as part of their Healthy Club initiative. The club will operate in line with Covid-19 restrictions and are currently looking for people to train as leaders for the club. For anyone interested, training can be done online and the link is available through the club’s Facebook page.
TAKE A WALK FOR ME PROJECT
Sligo County Council, through the Sligo Healthy Ireland Fund 2019-2021, has commissioned four artists to creatively capture Sligo walks to explore the relationship between people and their environment. Older members of Sligo community are asked to share their favourite walk. The ‘Take a Walk for Me’ project aims to explore four of the suggested walks through song, visual imagery, written word and soundscape recordings while also investigating the history of walking and its social meaning. A selection of the visual imagery and written word created will be presented as postcards during the Bealtaine Festival Sligo May 2021 and will be distributed widely throughout the community. To tell us about your walk you can: Text Catherine at 086 8424969. Put pen to paper and send it to Take a Walk for Me project, Sligo Arts Office, City Hall, Quay St, Sligo, F91 PP44 or email catherinefanning@hotmail.com.
SHAMROCK GAELS
The club will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2022 and they will mark the occasion with the publication of a Club History Book. The book will chart the many ups and downs since March 17, 1972, when the Sooey and Knockalassa clubs amalgamated to form Shamrock Gaels. This project has now started and they are soliciting content such as stories and photographs from the community. They are particularly interested in photographs from the first 30 years. If anyone has photographs from this period please scan and email to pro.shamrockgaels.sligo@gaa.ie or whatsapp a photo to 087 2358840.
