Our freedoms are being taken away

- Dear Sir,

The Government has just said that this latest shutdown of society will continue until April and even longer in the year and that we must grin and bear it.

This, as we wait a long time to get the vaccination for the Coronavirus.

As it stands we can only go no more than five kilometres from our homes before being stopped by An Garda Siochana and risk being fined and sent home.

That’s okay as the Gardaí are only doing their duty and following orders from the politicians in Dublin.

What I am writing to complain about is that while our political leaders are making things very hard for ordinary people like not being let leave the country on holidays even to go to other towns and cities in Ireland, our Taoiseach Micheal Martin and other Government ministers have said that they are going to the US and other countries for St Patrick’s Day celebrations, being wined and dined by taxpayers’ money in posh hotels while we are made stay at home under lock and key.

This is double standards by our politicians. Our country is being turned into a prison and our politicians are the jailers.

Ireland is becoming like the old Soviet Union under communism when no one was allowed to leave the State under Stalin.

I feel that our leaders are slowly taking away our freedom bit by bit and are using the doctors and Covid-19 as an excuse to strip us of our rights.

What next I wonder? Armed soldiers patrolling the streets and a curfew to be obeyed?

In who’s interest I wonder as Big Brother uses all in their power to contact us - as the politicians live the high life on junkets in America.

Yours faithfully,

Martin Ford, St Anne’s Terrace, Sligo
