MAHON & O’DOWD FUNERAL DIRECTORS
THROUGHOUT the Covid-19 pandemic, we have been forced to change our proud funeral tradition and the way we deal with the loss of a loved one. The measures we now have to take such as social distancing, limited numbers and no handshaking has made it even more difficult. Families dealing with loss during this time need more support than ever from their relatives, friends and communities. We have seen how friends and neighbours have supported families over the past year by standing at the end of their driveways and lining the streets or entrance to the church grounds, while socially distancing, as the funeral passes by. This has been a huge support to the families involved and long after the pandemic has passed, it will be fondly remembered. During normal times, condolence books were used in funeral homes and wake houses, but this has now changed to online condolence books and also returned to the traditional hand-written letters. We encourage people to send letters and messages of condolence as it is of great support to bereaved families in a time where social contact is limited.
Although funerals have changed and restrictions are in place, we, at Mahon and O’Dowd Funeral Directors, are here to guide you throughout every step. We will endeavour to look after the deceased and their families with the same dignity and dedication, as we always have. The choice of burial or cremation is still at the discretion of the family and we will respect your traditions, values and wishes throughout this difficult time.
Both established in 1972, Mahon’s of Boyle and O’Dowd’s of Gurteen joined together in 2020 to become Mahon and O’Dowd Funeral Directors serving Boyle, Gurteen and all surrounding areas.
Mahon’s Funeral Home in Boyle has been fully renovated and with the addition of O’Dowd’s Funeral Home, which has been recently opened in Gurteen, we now offer modern, welcoming and comfortable venues in which families are afforded precious time with their loved ones.
