Young men in court on drug charges

A number of young men were before Judge Kevin Kilrane at last Thursday’s sitting of Sligo District Court on drugs possession charges.

Anthony Delaney (28) of Kiernan Avenue, Collooney, was charged with possession of alprazolam and also cannabis.

The charges related to December 15 th 2018 at Summerhill Roundabout. Mr Gerard McGovern (solicitor) defending said they were entering a plea in relation to the matter. Sergeant Derek Butler outlined the value of the cannabis was €50 while there were 13 tablets, totalling €130.

He said the defendant had seven previous conviction­s, none for the misuse of drugs. Delaney explained to the judge that he bought a small bag of cannabis and the tablets as he was having panic attacks.

He ordered him to pay €200 to Hope House and applied the Probation Act. The money has to be in court at this Thursday’s sitting.

Also at the same court, James Taheny (23) of Killeenduf­f, Ballygawle­y was charged with possession of cocaine at Harmony Hill on October 7 th 2018.

Defending solicitor Mr Gerard McGovern indicated there was a plea. Sergeant Butler said the amount in question was €100. He had no previous conviction­s.

The judge asked the defendant if he was still using cocaine and he replied no, that he used to a few years ago.

Mr McGovern said his client had never been in court before, had no previous conviction­s and this was the end of a bad mistake.

He was ordered to pay €200 to Hope House and the Probation Act was applied.

Also at the same court, Brian Whyte (22) of Loughros Point, Ardara, Co Donegal was charged with possession of cannabis herb at Glencarrig, Ballinode on February 19 th 2020.

Sergeant Derek Butler said the amount was €10 and he had no previous conviction­s. The Probation Act was applied. Mr Mark Mullaney (solicitor) appeared.
