Request for Sligo to be included in the pyrite redress scheme Ballymote car park

-

CALLS for the Minister for Housing to include Sligo in the Pyrite Redress Scheme were heard at last week’s meeting of the Ballymote/Tubbercurry Municipal District.

Cllr Michael Clarke tabled a motion seeking that Sligo be included on the scheme, which is currently only for houses with pyrite issues in Mayo and Donegal.

Cllr Clarke said there were not many reported cases of it in Sligo, as it costs so much to get a report done. Nonetheless, he said there was evidence that houses built using product which has come from areas where mineral pyrite has been discovered in blocks and it was unfair that Sligo was not included.

This was echoed by Cllr Joe Queenan, who said he had raised the issue in the past and that there have been ‘several’ houses in West and South Sligo affected by pyrite.

Cllr Paul Taylor said he too had been contacted in relation to the issue and said Sligo needed to be on the scheme.

Acting Director of Services Tom Kilfeather told members the council would write to the Minister.

MORE signage is needed to highlight the new car park in Ballymote.

Cllr Dara Mulvey said it was great to see the new area open, but many people are still not using it, particularly those not familiar with the town.

Cllr Gerard Mullaney agreed, saying anyone coming into the town for the day should park there, instead of along the street.

Acting Director of Services Emer Concannon told councillors new signage has been ordered.

A 70-year-old man before Sligo District Court for drink driving has no intention of driving again, the court heard.

Eugene Coggins, of 2 Parke, Kilglass, Enniscrone, was before the court charged with the offence at Quigaboy, Enniscrone, on August 26 th 2020.

Defending solicitor Mr Michael Monahan said his client was entering a plea in the matter.

Sergeant Derek Butler told the court the reading was 221mg/100ml blood.

Mr Monahan said that the facts were quite simple, his client was 70 years old and lives alone in Enniscrone.

He had a few drinks and by the grace of God he didn’t hit anything. He said he has public transport and is not going to drive again.

Judge Kevin Kilrane said that in the circumstances bearing in mind his age and that he doesn’t intend on driving anymore, he presumes he has a free pass and Mr Monahan replied “yes”.

“I got that myself two years ago,” Judge Kilrane added.

He convicted and fined Coggins €100 and disqualified him for a period of three years.
