Success for athletes on track, pool
THERE was superb success for a trio of local athletes at the weekend both in athletics and swimming.
Grange’s Mona McSharry, who is currently studying in the University of Tennessee, set a new school record in the 100m breaststroke at the Women’s SEC Swimming and Diving Championships.
Tennessee wrapped up the third night of the competition winning three medals with the Sligo freshman setting a new school record.
After 15 events, Tennessee are sitting in 6th place in the championship standings. McSharry won her first individual SEC medal and stole the show for the Lady Vols, finishing second and setting the school record in 57.82.

There were more excellent performances from local athletes at the weekend’s Irish Life Health Elite Athlete Indoor Micro Meet in Dublin.
North Sligo’s Christopher O’Donnell was competing in the men’s 400m on Sunday.
He finished ahead of Crusaders AC’s Andrew Mellon to win in a time of 47:51.
Sligo-based athlete John Travers was also competing at the micro meet in both the 3,000m and 1,500m on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
The Dublin native was first to cross the finish line in the 3,000m event on Saturday, in a time of 7:50:40, ahead of UCD’s Darragh McElhinney in 7:50:80 and the Donore Harriers clubman was also in action on Sunday in the 1,500m.
He finished in 2nd place in a time of 3:41:74. UCD’s Luke McCann was first in 3:40:03.
It was announced yesterday (Monday) that Travers is in a selection of 24 athletes that will be taking part at the European Indoor Athletics Championships in Turon, Poland from March 5th to 7th.
