The Sligo Champion

Busy month ahead as two games rearranged

- JESSICA FARRY

Two Sligo Rovers fixtures have been switched by the FAI following the postponement of the Galway United game on Saturday evening.

The Galway game will now take place on Monday, April 22.

The game was postponed by the FAI on Saturday as a result of Storm Kathleen, with many Galway fans on their way or already in Sligo by the time the announcement had been made.

The Galway team had not yet arrived in Sligo, with the decision being made by the FAI and not Rovers or Galway.

Galway was under a status orange weather warning on Saturday, but the team were keen to travel and for the game to go ahead.

At the time, a statement from the FAI said: “The League of Ireland can confirm that tonight’s SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division fixture between Sligo Rovers and Galway United has been postponed over health and safety concerns owing to the risk of travelling, flying debris and power outages in the Sligo area amid an Orange Weather Warning issued by Met Eireann.”

It’s understood around 200 Galway fans had purchased tickets for the game.

Galway fans, and indeed some Sligo Rovers fans, were left frustrated by the FAI’s decision to postpone the game, particularly at short notice.

Sligo Rovers v Dundalk at The Showgrounds, originally scheduled to take place on Saturday, April 20, will now take place on Friday, April 19 at 7.45pm.

The fixture changes mean that the Bit O’Red will play five games in 18 days in April and May.

The Bit O’Red will travel to Tallaght on Friday evening where they meet Shamrock Rovers.

The sides drew in their first meeting earlier this season.

Simon Power is still serving a suspension following his red card against Waterford, while Nando Pijnaker remains sidelined with broken ribs sustained in the defeat to St Patrick’s Athletic after he collided with goalkeeper Ed McGinty.

It is hoped that McGinty will be fit for Friday’s game, while JR Wilson too could return in time for this encounter.

Should Wilson return, it will allow Charlie Wiggett to fill in at centre-back alongside Ollie Denham, with both Pijnaker and John Mahon out injured.
