Wexford Historical Society events for Heritage Week

WEXFORD Historical Society are getting involved with National Heritage Week with talks about historical figures connected with town and county and a tour of one of the town’s finest medieval churches.

Dr. Michael Herity, formerly of UCD Archaeolog­y Dept. and President of the Royal Irish Academy will deliver a lecture entitled 'John O'Donovan's work in South Leinster.'

This lecture coincides with the publicatio­n of his book ‘Ordnance Survey Letters Wexford’.

These letter-reports were written by O'Donovan in 1840 recording a wealth of informatio­n about place-names, antiquitie­s and historical geography. Many illustrati­ons by William F. Wakeman are published for the first time in this volume. The lecture is on Wednesday, 27 August at 8 p.m. in St. Michael's Hall, Green St.

On Thursday, August 28, at 7 p.m. in Enniscorth­y Library, Jarlath Glynn will give a talk on 'Augustus Welby PuginThe Wexford Connection'.

Chairman of Wexford Historical Society, Jarlath Glynn is the author of ‘Wexford - Then and Now’. His lecture will cover the many designs of Augustus Welby Pugin which are evident throughout County Wexford and in particular the College Chapel at St.. Peter's College, Tagoat Parish Church and Barntown. On Sunday, August 31, at 2 p.m. WHS will provide a guided tour of St. Patrick's Church and graveyard with an emphasis on its unique history from Viking times to the present day. It has been described as one of Wexford's finest medieval churches. The society adopted the graveyard site as one of its projects this Spring. The tour will be given by committee member M.J. Murphy.
