Superfoods for energy, detox and immunity

- WITH CLAIR WHITTY

People often ask me the difference between the superfoods Spirulina, Chlorella and Wheatgrass. While they all provide really good nutrition and have similar properties, each one has a particular strength. It is easy to be confused about which one to buy.

I always choose Spirulina for energy. It's a good source of B12, protein and Iron. This is very beneficial if you don't have a lot of red meat in your diet. Spirulina is often taken after any form of fitness training. It's also used to help balance blood sugar levels, which in turn prevents the sugar slumps which cause us to look for sweet treats. Take it before your meals to prevent this sugar slump . This will help you feel more satisfied too. So think ,Spirulina for energy.

I often suggest Chlorella when people want to detox after taking antibiotics or medication and want a little bit of nurturing. Start with a low dose if you have never used it before. It binds to heavy metals and this explains why it is often suggested when people are having mercury fillings removed. It's used to treat conditions that are associated with over acidity of the blood.

Wheatgrass is the one I would choose if I wanted to boost or support my immune system. Wheatgrass also helps make the body more alkaline, it is said that cancer cannot survive in an alkaline environment. If this is true then anything we can do to achieve that state would be helpful. But that would also mean looking at the rest of our diet, and reducing any acid forming foods that might be contributing to an acidic state.

Superfoods are available singly or in combination and in capsules or powder. If you choose powder you can add them to smoothies, yoghurts, juice or breakfasts. Making superfoods part of your daily routine can make a very positive improvement in your diet and health.
