KILANERIN-BALLYFAD

The club extends sympathies to the family of the late Greta Byrne who died during the week. Greta was the wife of former club Chairperson Mick Byrne, and mother of Michael, Gráinne, Sinéad and Gareth. May she rest in peace.

Teams of the week have to be both the Under-18 hurlers, who had a 5-16 to 1-13 win over Norman Gaels on Wednesday last, and the Under-18 footballers who are in a threeway play-off for a place in the cup or shield semi-final.

Under-10s, -12s twice, -14s and -16s all played over the weekend. The Under-10 football Kent Cup finals are to take place in Kilanerin on Wednesday, August 27, at 6.45 and 7 p.m. This is always a great finale and with eight teams involved, great entertainment too.

GUSSERANE

Our Under-12 camogie team was in action on Friday evening last away to Cushinstown. The match was a hard-fought battle. Gusserane were unfortunate to be without Caitlin Coleman, Emma Kehoe and Makala Sinnott due to injury, and we hope they make a quick recovery.

Gusserane started strongly, going in at halftime leading by 2-3 to 1-2 with our outstanding player Aoife Cullen getting the scores. Katie Whelan proved formidable in the goal and made significant saves when Cushinstown’s forwards eventually stole through our back line.

The powerhouse that is Lauren Roche made some great clearances, sending them past midfield where they were converted skilfully by Maeve Duffy, with short passes from Chloe Ryan and beautiful finishing for goals by Aoife Cullen.

Cushinstown came out strongly in the second-half. Gusserane girls Anna Dillon, Kate Dillon and Heather Fergurson didn’t give up and stuck to their players, marking well. Danielle Sinnott made some passes to the forward line.

Gusserane did respond well in the secondhalf and put the pressure back on. Katie Rossiter-Feeney and Lauren Roche in the back line hounded their opponents, never giving up. Cushinstown forwards broke though our tough defence and scored their goals, and the game ended Cushinstown 5-2, Gusserane 2-3.

The Gusserane midfielders had a hard time snapping at their heels, and they couldn’t catch Cushinstown who cleared the ball with ease and proved the stronger team in the end. Gusserane gave it everything and Aoife Cullen (captain) was outstanding as usual and never gave up. Well done to the girls and thanks to all of them for the commitment, to the parents and all who supported and helped.

Panel: Emma Kehoe, Aoife Cullen, Maeve Duffy, Caitlin Coleman, Katie Rossiter-Feeney, Lauren Roche, Chloe Ryan, Caoimhe Bird, Anna Dillon, Makala Sinnott, Kate Dillon, Heather Ferguson, Mackenzie Molloy, Katie Whelan.

The Under-14 girls’ team play in the county final versus Adamstown in Taghmon on Saturday at 3 p.m. Gusserane beat a very strong Clonee team in the semi-final.

That finishes the boys for this year so we would like to thank Denny, Derek, Joey and Harry for all the work they put in, the parents for hauling them around, and the boys themselves for the work they did.

Panel: Eoin Stafford, Tommy Ryan, Jacob Ferguson, Eoin Codd, Pádraig Pilkington, Conor Barron, Kevin O’Donohoe, Joe Astley, Mateusz Lis, Colin Walshe, Aaron Whelan, Jamie Sheehan, Mark Kehoe, Dylan Ryan, Michael Hennessy, Mark Flynn, Conor Twomey, Mathew McCillian, Emmet Cullen, Evan Kiely, Patrick Sinnott.

The Under-16 footballers beat Oylegate well on Monday last, putting them into the semifinals.

The Under-12 13-a-side team went out of the championship at the quarter-final stage to a strong Crossabeg side on Tuesday last. The Under-12 eleven-a-side team had a great win by 3-9 to 3-1 over Starlights to qualify for the county semi-final.

Best of luck to Mark O’Neill playing with the Under-16 county squad on Saturday in Tipperary, and also to Tommy Ryan playing on the Under-14 Tony Forristal squad on Saturday in Waterford.

For further details regards registering your name, please call into the shop any time you are in the club grounds.

The camogie club hosted an Under-8 tournament recently where a great day was had by all. Up to 16 teams took part and Buffers Alley were in a position to field two teams with everyone getting to play four games which included a final.

It is great to report that none of the Buffers Alley teams lost any of their eight matches which is a great credit to the club and to the girls themselves. A special thanks to all parents involved as the whole event was a huge team effort and this was reflected in the positive feedback received from the visiting clubs.

Thanks also to the Under-14 girls who helped referee and to Catherine O’Loughlin for her encouraging words to these aspiring camogie players.

The Under-10 County Board-organised games have now finished up with the girls winning two games in their group. It is hoped to arrange friendly games for this great bunch of girls in the coming weeks against other local teams.

CASTLETOWN-L MELLOWS

In the Minor ladies’ football, congratulations to the girls who beat Clonee in a thrilling county final in a packed Kilanerin. Clonee threw everything at the game and brought a huge physicality and had us under pressure from the start, but credit to the Castletown girls who dug deep and got back in the game through two great goals from Cailin Fitzpatrick.

Half-time came and the scores were level. Castletown started to take over and worked the ball much better than they did in the firsthalf, with Doireann Kavanagh having an outstanding game in the middle.

After some nice scores and what can only be said as heroic defending from the backs and the substitutes that came on, Castletown pulled away with a cracker of a goal from Hayley Murphy.

The turning point of the game was when Róisín Gough made an excellent save from a Clonee penalty in the second-half. The fulltime score was Castletown 3-6, Clonee 1-6. Great scenes were witnessed at the end as Donna Morrissey, our team captain, accepted the cup. It was much deserved and great credit also to Clonee who gave it their all.

The club would like to say well done and thank you to Anthony Masterson (manager), Dawn Bergin (selector) and Jo Murphy (physio).

Hard luck to the Junior hurlers who played their replay versus St. Pat’s Sunday evening. It was a very close match with St. Pat’s getting the victory by two points (3-21 to 4-16). Well done to all involved in the Junior hurling on a hard-fought campaign.

A huge thank you to all who donated blood at our first-ever clinic at our complex in Tagoat last week. It was very encouraging to see so many people turn up to donate and the response was fantastic. We hope to run the clinic again in the coming months and we would urge anyone who can to donate.

The I.B.T.S. sent us this thank you note this week: ‘It’s in your Blood’. The Irish Blood Transfusion Service Carlow Centre held its first G.A.A. clinic in St. Mary’s G.A.A. Complex Rosslare/Tagoat. This clinic came about though an initiative between the I.B.T.S. and the G.A.A. ‘It’s in your Blood’, which aims to increase blood donations throughout the country.

‘The I.B.T.S. would like to take the opportunity to thank all 104 donors who attended the clinic. Also a special mention to those involved in organising and promoting especially P.R.O. Corinna Sheil who took on the challenge of being the local volunteer for St. Mary’s, and worked so diligently to make the clinic a success.
