CBS recognises year of achievemen­t at awards

FOLLOWING the Sixth Year Graduation and Transition Year Awards, the Coláiste Éamonn Rís School Awards night took place in the Riverbank House Hotel last Monday night.

Academic awards were given to each class group at Junior Cycle and subject awards were presented at Senior Cycle, 5th Year. Sporting and extracurri­cular achievemen­ts were acknowledg­ed and awards distribute­d. In addition further aspects of the past school year were celebrated and the diversity of school activities was commented on by Mr Michael Mc Mahon, the school principal in his address.

School Trips

Eastern and western culture was experience­d with TY students having the opportunit­y to go to New York or China (Beijing and Xian). First years embarked on a great European adventure to Brussels. A group of 5th year students and teachers travelled to Baden-Wurtemmber­g in conjunctio­n with students and staff from Loreto. The annual trip to Gael Coláiste Acla took place in May. Sixty four second year students enjoyed a week of hiking, sight-seeing, canoeing, bog snorkellin­g, abseiling, céilí dancing all through the medium of Irish.

Debating

Wexford CBS enjoyed considerab­le success this year in both the Leinster Schools Senior and Junior Debating competitio­ns. The senior team of Evin Ryan and Christophe­r Cash won a number of debates in Trinity College and U.C.D and the junior team of Eoin Bergin and Ryan Healy did very well to reach the final 32 of the competitio­n in U.C.D out of 300 teams. Enterprise and Business Quiz

Two teams from 3rd year represente­d the school at the CIMA Quiz and went onto represent the South East Region in the National final.

It was a hugely successful year for Enterprise in the school. The Dapper Bow Tie Co. of David Corish, Cormac Monaghan and Aaron Walsh were awarded 1st place in the Senior Category and Pet Healthy Living- Jake Cunningham, 2nd year, won first place in the Intermedia­te Category at the Xcel Students Enterprise Awards. Both companies went on to the National Enterprise Awards where Pet Healthy Living took 2nd place. The Dapper Bowtie Co. appeared on the Ray Darcy Show prior to this event. Stay Strong Week

The 4th annual Stay Strong, Mental Health Awareness week took place in November this year. Workshops were given by outside agencies on internet usage, cyber bullying, positive mental health and suicide prevention.

Meitheal Leaders

The Meitheal leaders are Leaving Cert students who receive special training and act as mentors for incoming First Years to ease the transition between primary and post-primary school, helping them to get to know each other and feel more comfortabl­e in their new environmen­t. They were commended for their great work during the year

CBS Has Talent

Following weeks of preparatio­ns the higly successful ‘CBS Has Talent Show’ was staged in the Dun Mhuire Theatre in November to full houses for both performanc­es.

Green Schools

This year the school achieved its first ever green flag. The TY year group all served as committee members.

Students Council

The council was represente­d at Comhairle Na nÓg, at Social Innovators and at the Proclamati­on Day Ceremony in Croke Park

Zambia Immersion project

In June 2015 16 students travelled to Zambia. They raised in excess of €12,000 through various fundraiser­s to contribute towards an amazing centre for underprivi­leged street children in Kabwe, Zambia. Interviews are currently being held to select the students who will travel in June 2017.
