NEWROSSSENIORS
In glorious sunshine with the north-easterly breeze keeping temperatures down somewhat on recent days, we had a great turn-out of 14 teams last Thursday.
The sun cream was to be seen in profusion on many a pale skin and on the legs of the many who sported different shades of shorts reaching just below the knee. It would take a lot of sun to bronze up some of the legs on show last Thursday.
The weekly competition as always was mustard keen, and with the greens becoming lightning fast some high scores were expected. But most found the going tough with the breeze of no advantage on most holes.
However, it was as good for one team as it was for the next and in the end only three points separated the winners and the second and third prize winners.
Here, the quartet of Willie Byrne (13), Andy Ronan (14), Aidan Kent (20) and Tony Sexton (27) took the number one spot with a score of 90 points. In second place on 88 points came John Browne (12), John Joe Cullen (18), John Joe Murray (20) and Jamesie Murphy (23).
A three-person team comprising Danny O’Leary (8), Peter Goggin (17) and Liam Glasheen (19) finished third, scoring 87 points (81+6).
Nearest the pin prizes went to John Browne on the ninth hole and Johnny Watson on the eleventh.
We make our annual visit to Tramore on Tuesday, June 14, where we play a mixed team event comprising two players from each club. A good number have already booked in, and if you want to travel please contact Jamesie Murphy on 051-421151 or 085-1846172 as soon as possible as spaces are limited.
The entry fee is only €15 which includes tea/coffee/ scone. Tee-times and pairings will be available for inspection on next Thursday, June 9.
The sincere sympathy of all the Seniors goes to our popular and esteemed member, Seán O hUginn, and his family in their recent sad bereavement, the death of son, John, at the young age of 42 years. May his gentle soul rest in peace.

Well done to the Senior foursomes team which had a great win over Woodenbridge in Wexford on Wednesday. The Mary McKenna team also had a great win over Rosslare on Thursday, making them county champions! Well done ladies on the great golf played.
The draw has been made for the Kathleen Pyne singles matchplay and is on display in the locker room.
WEXFORDLADIES
Our good summer weather continued last week with equally good golf! On Thursday Deirdre Colfer continued her good form by claiming first prize, and Mary O’Leary was in great form, coming second in both the mixed on Tuesday and Thursday - a win for Mary is surely just around the corner!
The same can be said for Maisie Purcell who featured in the Seniors on Monday and won the Senior section on Thursday.

Thursday’s competition was sponsored by Fehily’s Chemist, and 83 members played in good but cool and tough enough conditions.

ROSSLARE
The singles competition on Sunday week saw the return, after a long absence, of Tim Quinlivan to the winners’ enclosure.
Tim (8) started with two birdies to turn in 23 points. He failed to score at the eleventh but then birdied the 14th for a back nine of 18 points and a one-point win over John Hanrick (14), another absentee from the prize-winners’ list for some time.
John had birdies at the 13th and 16th for a back nine of 23 points and beat Pat Goff (13) on the breakdown. Fourth on 39 points was Nicholas Rossiter (16).
The in-form John Brady (+1) had three twos at the second, eighth and 14th, and also birdied the 12th, 13th and 18th to win the gross on two under par.

The Kelly’s Resort Pro-Am takes place on Saturday, September 10, and is supporting two very deserving charities: Wexford Hospice Home Care and St. Patrick’s Special School Building Fund. Congratulations and best wishes to Aggie Corish who celebrated her 100th birthday on May 18. She was Captain in 1964 and is part of the Corish family that has enjoyed a long association with the club. Her late husband, Ray, was a former Captain and President.
Best Wishes to the Captain, Keith Deacon, who presents his prize to the members next Friday and Saturday.
ROSSLARELADIES
Every Friday morning from September to May there is a nine-hole competition for ladies, where beginners can play golf, learn the rules and etiquette, and can meet new and experienced golfers.
This competition was started by Girlie Martin, who was a fantastic golfer, is passionate about golf, and wanted to give back something to the club. This is currently run by Sheila Doyle and Elizabeth Callaghan who generously give up their time every Friday morning - a big thank you!
On Friday, May 27, the ‘Friday mornings’ had their annual end of year lunch which was attended by Girlie herself, now in her 80s, Sheila, Elizabeth, our lady Captain, lady President and players.
There was a presentation of prizes for the end of season competition: Cat. A, Sheila Hendrick, 23 points; Cat. B, Sheelagh Malone, 26 points.
They gave a generous donation to the club charity for replacing trees that have been cut down. We owe a big thank you to Girlie who set this up, and her helpers who run it, and we hope it may continue into the future as is Girlie’s wish.
I started my own golf on the Friday mornings and know that it has given me and so many others so much enjoyment and encouragement in golf.
On a personal note I cannot let the week go by without noting the sudden and shocking news of the passing of our fellow member, Carmel Redmond. Carmie played with my gang every Tuesday since she retired from working as a teacher a few years ago.
She was one of the most generous and ‘giving of herself’ people I have ever met which was reflected by her son, Gavin’s, most eloquent and fitting tribute to her at her funeral. He later said how Carmie loved her Tuesday golf and it was her sanity.
This must surely apply to so many of us. She bore her illness so bravely. Carmie, you will be missed. May she rest in peace.
Unfortunately, we were not so lucky in some of our team matches last week. The Mary McKenna team was beaten in New Ross after winning its first leg.
The Minor team lost to Gowran Park after getting to the third round, and the Senior foursomes lost to Kilkenny after fierce competition against very low handicappers. We hope Valerie Doyle, who was injured playing, is back on the fairways soon and she will be missed. Our players, managers and caddies all battled so well in their matches and have done us proud.

The first real ‘major’ of the year, the Captain’s prize, was played over Saturday and Sunday. With the course in magnificent condition thanks to Jake and his staff, scoring was expected to be like the weather, very hot.
However, Captain Paddy Cleary with his choice of pin positions made scoring a little difficult and the competition was a real test of golf. The winner at the end of 27 holes was Jim McGee, who after 15 years of trying finally won the coveted green jacket.
Captain Paddy and sponsors J. Donohoe BMW and Paul Harrington put up a large number of excellent prizes and the winners were: 1, Jim McGee; 2, Rhys Clarke; 3, Ray Cullinane; gross, Leo Connolly; 4, Ed Mooney; vets., Paul Lauhoff.
The category prizes were won by Declan Furlong (0-9), Richard Browne (10-18) and Terry Dempsey (19-28). The leading qualifiers were Dean Malone on Saturday and James Nolan on Sunday.
The ladies’ prize was won by Jacinta O’Neill. First place in the Junior competition went to Diarmuid McDonald, with Seán Hopkins in second place.
The Juvenile winners were: 1, Dylan O’Neill; 2, Thomas Rowland; 3, Cillian Corkery; 4, Ben McAleese.

Wednesday’s fourball event was won by Anthony Corish and Paul Carthy with 33 points (back five). In second place also on 33 points and getting his Captain’s week of to a good start were Paddy Cleary and Marty Walsh.
Friday’s singles competion was the first leg in the Jim Whitty Memorial Cup and resulted in a win for Jack Small on 41 points, with Mick Creane in second place on 38 points followed by John Ffrench also on 38 points. The gross winner was Peter Byrne.
In the Seniors’ section, Tuesday’s winners of the four-person scramble were Peter Rice, Mortimer Ambrose, Micheál Field and Michael O’Brien.
There was a big surprise in Tuesday’s mixed competition with the husband and wife pairing of Paddy and Mary O ‘Leary coming in winners. Apparently Mary played brilliant golf but Paddy did pay the entry fee.
Well done to our ladies who had a great win over Callan on Sunday.

Thank you very much to Ingrid and Joe Butler of Middletown House Nursing Home and Retirement Village for their sponsorship. Ingrid presented first prize to Eileen Moriarty who had a great score of 44 points.
In second place was Sorcha Howell (4) with 37 points (back nine). Third was Sarah Donnellan (8) with 37 points (back nine), and Cat. A went to Caroline Hewitt (7) with 36 points.
The Cat. B winner was Claire Daly (21) with 35 points (back nine), and Cat. C went to Norma Casey (29) with 37 points. Nine-hole: 1, Breda Nolan (35), 17 points; 2, Clare Kinsella (35), 16 points.
Well done to the Junior Foursomes team managed by Frances Swords which beat Wicklow and now proceed to the third round.
