ENNISCORTHY

Our AIG Pierce Purcell Shield team, managed by Dick Britton and Ed Morrison, travel to St. Helen’s Golf Resort on Saturday, June 20, to take part in regional qualifiers.

They will tee off at 10 a.m. alongside Arklow. The best four teams from Saturday’s strokes play qualifier will play matchplay on Sunday to decide who advances to the next stage of the competition. Best of luck to all concerned.

The Monday ladies’ and gents’ open singles, May 30 (59 played; S.S., 37 points ladies and 36 points men): 1, Jenny King (6), 41 points (back nine); 2, Andy Lehane (Wexford, 15), 41 points; gross, Martin Sludds (4), 31 points (back nine).

The Captain’s prize was on last weekend with three competitions taking place. Firstly was the Captain’s prize to the Juniors and the Captain’s prize to the five-day, distance and overseas members, both on Friday.

On Saturday and Sunday was the Captain’s rrize to the full members, which involved an 18-hole strokes competition with the best 27 scores playing again on Sunday evening in a nine-hole competition, with both scores being combined.

The cut line was at 73 or less, with three of the scores of 74 making it in via a countback. Those who just missed the cut were ruing those one or two bad shots or penalties that would have made all the difference. There is always next year.

As I write the results have just been handed to me and I can tell you that the scoring was as tight as it could be, as the first seven places only had 1.5 points between them. What a battle it must have been. Results will be published in full next week.

Donohoe Škoda three-person team, May 28-29 (129 played): 1, Brian Balfe (5), Declan Balfe (13), Eddie Balfe (8), 91 points; 2, Jimmy Doran (16), Paddy Mooney (13), Raj Tirbhowan (18), 91 points (back nine); 3, Karl Cullen (13), Jim Hogan (10), Cormac Martin (2), 88 points (last six).

Our in-house Senior men’s group called ‘The Brittle Bones Society’ played last Thursday week and the four-man winning team was Michael Collins, Denis Coughlan, Kieran Moloney and Charlie O’Brien with 52.2 points.

They also played last Monday and the four-man winning team was Jim Earle, Tom Furlong, Kieran Moloney and Neville Tector with a brilliant score of 48.1 which included no less than seven birdies and the rest were all pars. The record is apparently eight birdies, so near yet so far.

And on last Thursday the winners with 52.5 points were Michael Doyle, Willie Dunne, Tom Furlong and Gordon Radloff. All three games were over 15 holes.

A new initiative is starting soon by our resident Pro, Stephen Fitzpatrick, on June 23 at 6 p.m. for one-hour duration for five weeks. It is a men’s group coaching scheme and covers a different style of shot each week - chipping; putting; pitching; bunkers, and the full swing.

Notes will be given to individuals after each session, and it is open to members and non-members. Five hours of coaching for only €50.

There is a fantastic new offer available to anyone thinking of starting to play golf available at Enniscorthy. We call it ‘give golf a try’. It is a ‘learn to play’ membership for just €150.

For this you get three months’ membership which is available Monday to Friday, a free group lesson with our resident professional, Stephen Fitzpatrick, on-course mentoring with some of our ‘seasoned’ members, free use of golf clubs if you don’t have any for the lesson, and special ‘learn to play’ competitions.

There is a limited availability on numbers for this so act fast if you wish to avail of this new and innovative idea over the summer months. If you should then decide that you would like to join as a full member, then there is no joining fee and we will deduct the €150 that you have already paid from your annual subscription. Now that is what you call a deal!

If you know of anyone who might be interested in this offer, then please encourage them to take it up, a great way to spend the summer months. Utilise it as a treat for the Leaving Cert. students before they start third level.

The draw for our club singles/club fourball took place recently and the preliminary round for the singles has to be complete by June 19, while the first round fourball has to be completed by July 13. There will be no extensions to these dates.

The only rule change this year is in the club fourball where the 3/4 handicap difference has been replaced by 9/10. All matches will be off the blue pins.

We have two classics coming up shortly. The first will be hosted by the Lions Club and will take place on Friday, June 10. Bookings can be made through the club office on 05392-33191.

The second is hosted by Wexford Ladies’ Gaelic football on July 1 and the cost is €200 per team, meal included. For further information and timesheet ring Denis Nolan on 086-8111878.

There will be a welcome night for the 2014-2016 new members on Monday, June 13, at 7.30 p.m.
