MEANSCOIL STUDENTS FÊTED
THE end of year awards at Meanscoil Garman took place in Oylegate last Thursday with many of the students being honoured for their achievements.
Principal Norah Harpur said the awards ceremony had been a fantastic occasion with all of the students being delighted with the event.
‘It went really well. We had a lot of awards to give out on the day. We had three academic awards for each of the classes in the school. These were the best student academically, the student who had made the best effort in class and the student who had made the most progress.
‘In addition to that we also had sporting awards, debating awards, an award for the team who had won the All Ireland quiz competition, an award for the students who won the French essay writing competition and of course Transition Year awards.
‘ There were a lot of these because of the many activities that the students take part in during the TY year including the Junk Kouture awards, the mini company awards and the AIB Build a Bank challenge.
‘We also had Coiste Gaeilge awards for students who promote Irish within the school, student council awards and Meitheal awards.
‘ The sports person of the year award was given to Jack O’Nuallain de Faoitnigh who is a fantastic swimmer and swims 4,000m each morning before coming to school. The Eileen Gray award went to Marc Bolton Lee who is a big Eileen Gray fan and who had done a lot of research into her.
‘On the day we also had awards for individual subjects including art, music, maths and science.
‘ Two of our most treasured awards are the School Spirit award and the award for the person who is most loyal to the Irish language and promotes it diligently. The School Spirit award went to Robbie Kildea while Emma Ni Bhroin was deemed the person most loyal to the Irish language.
‘Ciara Ni Bhroin won the DELF award which is a special EU exam that the students sit in French and Irish. The Irish results aren’t known yet but the French results were announced recently and two students received 96 out of 100 and Ciara received 98 out of 100 which was the best mark in the entire country.’
As a result of Ciara’s superb result in the competition the French Embassy have paid for a trip for Ciara and her dad to see the Irish Belgium match in Bordeaux later this month.
The parents provided tea and refreshments after the awards which went down a treat.
