Best of luck to our Boyne Trophy team which plays Abbeyleix on Monday afternoon, and to our Mary McKenna team which plays Borris in Borris at 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 26.

NEWROSSSENIORS

We enjoyed a great day in Tramore on our annual visit last Tuesday where we teamed up with the locals in a mixed team format. Playing in a Seniors-only environment makes the game far more enjoyable for veterans rather than taking on young guns in competitions where they have no hope.

It is a wonder that more clubs do not organise more Senior competitions, especially in open week which if properly run can be of enormous financial benefit to the host club. Our fixture list for the year compiled in January has seen us enjoy many away outings, with more to come later in the year where we compete on a level playing field just like our weekly games at home.

At Tramore an all-New Ross team were impressive winners of the champagne scramble which is a format well suited to the older brigade. Gelling well, John Joe Murray (21), Martin Forristal (21), Frank Boyle (22) and Martin Burke (25) took home the choice French wine, scoring a terrific 67 points.

In second place on 66 points came a mixed team comprising Steve Travis (18), Peter Hackett (Tramore, 21), Les Jastrebski (25) and Seamus Kavanagh (Tramore, 25).

Third spot went to Eamon Delaney (16), Pat Traynor (19), Jim Whelan (Tramore, 19) and Michael Kennedy (Tramore, 22) with 65 points. A point behind (64 points) and in fourth place were John Hayden (Tramore, 8), John English (Tramore, 21), Jim ‘Dublin’ Ryan (23) and Tony Sexton (27).

Many thanks go to Anthony Condon and Michael Cummins of the host club for organising the outing so efficiently and for their hospitality on the day. It was much appreciated by our New Ross group.

We have no team game next Thursday as it is the club open singles, but we are back on Thursday, June 30, as usual.

NEWROSS

It’s busy times at New Ross Golf Club with open week in progress and a number of teams in action.

J.J. Cullen (18), Eddie Morrissey (19), Paul Harrington (8) and Andy Lawlor (13) got open week off to a great start with a brilliant winning score of 55.2 in the 18-hole open four-person scramble sponsored by The Shelmaliers Golf Society.

The team of Matty Wall (14), John Browne (13), Mark O’Mahony (6) and John Howlin (10) finished half a shot back in second place, with third place going to Donal O’Callaghan (14), Ger Ronan (6), Pat McGrath (18) and Colm Kehoe (12) with a 57.

The first open fourball of the week, sponsored by Frisby Kitchens, was won by West Waterford’s Ger Mulcahy (16) and Martin O’Driscoll (14) with 44 points. They saw off the New Ross pair of Cormac Farrell (14) and Steve Travis (18) on the countback, with Tom O’Connor (16) and Eamon Delaney (15) a further shot back in third place.

There was some great scoring in the Louis Fitzgerald Group open singles. Leo Carroll (13) finished on top of the pile with 42 points, just edging out Eamon Dungan (6) on the countback.

Andrew Ryan (5) recorded a level par round for 41 points and third place, whilst Robbie Farrell was around in one under to win the gross. The categories were won by Mark O’Mahony (6, 39 points), Harry Doran (10, 39 points) and the in-form James O’Keefe (17, 39 points).

There was good news on the teams front where two more New Ross outfits advanced to the quarter-finals of their events. The All-Ireland fourball team, led by Junior Cashin, saw off reigning Leinster champions Coollattin in a very close match.

Pat Whelan and Jamesie Wallace, and Robert O’Dwyer and Patsy Farrell, provided home wins with Des Redmond and Leo Booth securing the vital away win to decide the tie. New Ross meet the winners of Cill Dara and Portarlington in the next round.

The Barton Cup team continued their good run with a very good win against Wicklow side Druid’s Heath. Brian St. Ledger and Paul McGrath, and Derek Ronan and Seamus Aldridge, recorded wins in Tinneranny whilst Davy Doran and Andrew Ryan sealed the victory with a brilliant away win.

The team is managed by Brian Teague and James Roche, and will meet Woodbrook in the quarter-finals.

The Jimmy Bruen team put in a very good performance in their regional qualifier at Borris last weekend. The team, managed by Michael Kelleher, finished in third place, just missing out on a top two finish that would have qualified them for the knockout phase.

The team was made up of Jim Larkin and Leo Carroll, Declan Breen and Paul Goff, Tommy Liston and Michael Heaphy, Mossy Connell and Harry Reinhardt, and John Howlin and Davy Doran. Next weekend the Senior Cup team faces Kilkenny in Enniscorthy in a first round match.

ROSSLARELADIES

Last Tuesday the forecast was bad for all day. Some of us texted, chatted, debated on whether to play in the rain or do coffee. Who likes getting soaked?

But on this day, it was a case of ‘the early bird catches the worm’. Niamh Byrne and her partner must surely have been the first out in the wet and well done to Niamh (10) as she came first with a great 37 points.

It was a great result and you will be down to single figures soon we hope, Niamh. In the end 47 ladies ventured out and if they didn’t have their shower in the morning they got a free one later that day!

Also out in the wet were our new lady golfers who were participating in the golf taster session. There has been a great response to this and Tuesday was the last day of the first part of this programme.

There was four weeks of lessons and four weeks of playing on the Burrow course, in a scramble format, with a current member. This culminated with a wine and cheese event on Tuesday evening with nearly all 51 ladies attending.

Our lady Vice-Captain Doreen McGovern, who ran the programme, was there with our lady Captain, Catherine Howard, professional Jamie O’Sullivan and helpers. We all had a lovely evening with all participants getting umbrellas and pedometers.

The winning team comprised Orla Byrne, Gay Brennan and Yvonne McGrath, and the top four teams all got prizes of goodie bags. This was helped by the C.G.I. We would like to welcome these ladies to our club and hope they will join up to the next part of the programme.

Our Revive team had a fantastic win against Bunclody with home and away matches. Some of the maches went to the 18th and 19th hole which made it all the more exciting, nail-biting and nerve-wracking for the players. The team is now through to the quarter-finals and will be playing against Cahir Park.

Congratulations to team managers Joan Bowe and Carmel Quinlivan, and team members Doreen McGovern and Kathleen Cullimore, Vandra Deacon and Chris White, Vonnie O’Connor and Carmel Quinlivan, Joan Bowe and Anne Redmond, and Máire Farrell and Susan Evans.

Best of luck to the Junior Cup Team, managed by Dorcas Maher, which is playing next Sunday, June 26, in the quarter-finals against Wexford in Bunclody.

Tuesday, June 28, is another one of the majors for the season - our Captain’s (Keith Deacon) prize to the ladies. It will be a singles strokes competition, medal and G.O.Y. There will also be a twelve-hole competition on the Burrow course for members and super Seniors.

Tuesday, June 14, singles stableford, C.S.S. 35 points, sponsored by Paul Maloney Pottery: 1, Niamh Byrne (10), 37 points; 2, Joan Wallace (17), 36 points (back nine); gross, Doreen McGovern (12), 21 points; 3, Ann Connolly (36), 36 points (back nine); 4, Norrie Goff (20), 36 points; Senior, Molly Cash (19), 33 points (back nine); 5, Carmel Morrissey (24), 33 points.

Wednesday, June 15, open singles, C.S.S. 35 points: 1, Ann Kelly (17), 34 points; 2, Pauline Cafferkey (25), 31 points (back nine).

WEXFORDLADIES

The weather wasn’t so favourable for golf over the last week. Monday’s Senior competition was called off due to very heavy rainfall.

On Tuesday twelve pairings were out in showery conditions and the winners were Rachel O’Connor and Paul Lambert, and in second place were Tara Dunne and Andrew O’Brien.

On Thursday yet again Deirdre Colfer brought in an amazing score of sevn up in fairly difficult conditions, but the weather didn’t affect her play as nobody else was above par on the day, so well done Deirdre!

Results: 1, Deirdre Colfer (29), seven up; 2, Mary Fallon (32), level (back six); gross, Helen Lacey (6), seven down; 3, Anna Sullivan (21), level (back nine); Senior, Carmel Murphy (9), two down; nine-hole stableford, Lelia Keating (17), 15 points; nearest the pin, Beppi O’Connor, 2m 40cm.

Next Thursday our strokes competition for a free sub is sponsored by Pump Supplies.

Our Senior foursomes team had a great victory in the quarter-final against New Ross last week. The pairings were Ruth Kennedy and Carmel Murphy, Helen Lacey and Rachel O’Connor, and Tara Dunne and Leonie Furlong. Well done ladies.

We shall hope for better weather this coming week even though our course is in brilliant condition due to the hard work and commitment from Jake and his crew.

ROSSLARE

On Friday and Saturday the Captain, Keith Deacon, presented his prize to the Rosslare members. Despite the long course and testing rough, scoring was excellent.

The winner with a 65 was one of the new members, Shay Davies.

Shay (16), who was a Junior member for a sort spell in the nineties, started with double bogey six. He then had seven pars in a row to turn in 39.

He had two more double bogeys, at the eleventh and 17th, but he birdied the 12th for a back nine of 42 and a one-shot win over long-time leader Alan Cuddihy (18).

Alan played on Friday and looked in a good position overnight. Alan, with an eight at the third, turned in 45, but had a sparking back nine of 39 which included four pars and a birdie at the 14th.

Tony O’Leary (scr.) won the gross on 69. He had birdies at the third, fifth and 13th and an eagle three at the 12th in halves of 35 and 34.
