WEXFORD CLUB IS ON THE CREST OF A WAVE AFTER BEATING TOUGH COMPETITION

-

WEXFORD Swimming Club is on the crest of a wave after winning the prestigious award of Best Regional Swimming Club of the Year in Leinster, fighting off stiff competition from more than 40 clubs including top Dublin clubs.

Club members attended an award ceremony in Titanic Belfast where they also received their Clubmark Award which is Swim Ireland’s quality mark given to less than 10 clubs in the whole of Ireland this year.

This represents the achievements and hard work of the voluntary committee and coaches who generously donate their time to the swimmers in the area. All coaches in the club have Swim Ireland qualifications and many year experience

Wexford Swimming Club ( WSC) is an all-inclusive club that caters for all levels of swimmers from beginners to elite competitors. They run their learn to swim programme on Friday nights starting with children as young as three years old. As swimmers progress they can either move into the squads to become stronger swimmers and eventually compete if they wish or join the water polo team which trains on Fridays also. Many swimmers chose to do both. Water polo provides great exercise and is a fun team sport for swimmers.

The club’s A squad, many of which have qualified for Irish Divison 1 Competition gave a demonstration at an open evening last Friday night to which the club invited children interested in joining and their parents.

WSC hosted a two galas recently with swimmers competing from over 20 clubs throughout Ireland. Many swimmers were in Wexford trying to achieve times for the National Competitions in July. They also had a fun gala on Saturday for younger swimmers which was a great success.

At the break on Sunday (June 19) they made a presentation to Nicholas Kearns the outgoing chairman thanking him for his years of dedicated service to the club.

WSC is twinned with ACN a swimming club in Coueron in France. They are one of the few clubs in Wexford who continue the twinning each year. This year will be the 33rd trip and Wexford swimmers will be hosting 20 swimmers and 4 adults from Coueron. The swimmers will be in Wexford for a week in July during which they will visit many local attractions. The Wexford swimmers will travel to Coueron next July for a week of fun with their French Hosts. The twinning trip is an excellent programme for the swimmers and many of them make lifelong friendships and repeat trips to France. Contact Maria on 086 1034867 for more information.
