KEEP SCREEN BEAUTIFUL

On Monday, July 4, and Tuesday, July 5, the organisers of the Keep Screen beautiful committee will meet in Screen village each evening at 6.30 p.m. They have entered the ‘Keep Wexford Beautiful’ Tidy competition and they need volunteers – men and women to finalise the work for this competition. as it will be judged the following week.

They need an hour or two of your time and as many people as they can assemble to strim ditches, trim hedges, and strim around sign posts on the following roads leading to the village, Garrylough to village, Ballyfarnogue to village, Hills road to village, Sandy lane to village. The old graveyard needs to be attended to and tidied up, and the roadside walls at the church and school need to be cleaned, as well as the wall at the old school and the walls at the bridge at Moville, Sandy Lane.

Volunteers are needed to sweep and tidy footpaths in the village etc and pick up any litter lying around. Unfortunately the committee cannot possibly reach on everything with the small group of volunteers they have, and that is where you come in.

They are appealing to everyone in the community to come out and lend a hand and hopefully they will reap the rewards of all their hard work in this competition and win a prize and be proud of Screen village.

CURRACLOE SCHOOL NEWS

A huge congratulations to the Curracloe school girls and their team mates from Screen and Castlebridge on winning the Rackard League final on Tuesday, June 21, with a good win over Blackwater.

The pupils from third to sixth class took part in a lunchtime school soccer league during last term. Medals were presented on Thursday, June 23, to the winners and runners up and all thoroughly enjoyed taking part. Well done to the winning team who had Barry Cloake, Harry Ferrick, Adam Murphy, Tom Garry, Rebecca Fanning, Jessica Doran, Muireann Lanigan, James Cloney, Alexia Keogh and Alex Garry on their panel.

On Thursday of last week, second class pupils and their teacher Mr Hackett attended the launch of ‘Butterflies of the Raven’ leaflet launch at the Raven Nature Reserve. The event was organised by Wexford County Council, the National Parks and Wildlife Service, the National Biodiversity Data Centre, the Friends of the Raven and the Wexford Naturalists’ Field Club to honour the memory of Chris Wilson, former Warden of the Wexford Wildfowl Reserve and great friend of Curracloe school who passed away last year.

Curracloe Music Group would like to extend an invitation for all to come along to their end of year concert which will be held on Wednesday, June 29, at 7.30 p.m in the school. Your support would be very much appreciated.

GAA ACTION

Congratulations to Shelmalier underage player Jack Watters-Cosgrave on his great performance in the Co. Wexford hurling Long Puck competition held in Kilmore on Saturday last. Jack was always in contention for the title but narrowly lost out to Blackwater man Peter O’Brien by a single point.

In an exciting game of hurling where both sides showed great determination and hurling skills the Shelmalier junior hurlers eventually got the better of Ferns by 4-14 to 0-12 in their league encounter played in Ferns on Friday evening last.

Aodhan Foley and Jody Donohoe got the Shelmaliers side off to an early lead, while goalie Paul McCleane was outstanding at the other end stopping many Ferns shots on goal in the early stages of the game. Full forward Stephen Whelan got his sides first goal in the tenth minute with further points from Johnny Campbell and Brian Doyle before Jody Donohoe scored his sides second goal direct from a long range free in the 20-fifth minute to leave a have time score of Shelmalier 2-7 Ferns 0-5.

Ferns came very strong on the resumption but great defending from Eoghan Fitzgerald, Kevin O’Leary and Eoin O’Leary in the full backline ensured their scoring was kept to a minimum. When Aodhan Foley got his side’s third goal in the fifteenth minute following great work by Stephen Rossiter the match was effectively over as a contest.

The Shelmalier senior hurlers take on local rivals St Martin’s in Piercestown this evening Tuesday starting at 8 p.m. and your support would be appreciated. Duffy Rovers paid a visit to Hollymount on Thursday evening last to take on the local side in two matches with all players well catered for in both matches. All the boys displayed the hurling skills they have learned and practiced over recent years and they put it to good use when winning both matches by a narrow margin.

The Shelmalier club was well represented on the Wexford senior football team that took on Fermanagh in the first round qualifiers in Wexford Park on Saturday last. The team was captained by Brian Malone from wing back and he was joined by Simon Donohoe at corner back who scored a great goal and Eoghan Nolan at wing forward. Unfortunately the northern side was victorious at the final whistle.

NEW SPORTS WEAR

There has been great excitement in Hollymount when the new and the very fashionable Shelmalier sports and leisure gear which was recently launched, was put on sale in the new sports shop. The new gear is intended to cover camogie, hurling and football for boy and girls, men and women of all sizes and all ages which will greatly cut down the costs for most families and individuals in the club.

The shop caters for all ages and sizes and if they are out of your size they will order it for you. The shop will be open as usual every Monday evening from 6.30 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. so why not go along and buy your gear or place an order.
