NEWROSS
There was mixed news on the teams front last weekend for New Ross, as the Brennan Cup team moved into the semi-finals and the Barton Cup team bowed out in its quarter-final.
In the Brennan Cup, Michael Ryan and Pat Whelan, Brian Teague and Declan Doyle, and Donal Hosey and Davy Doran, provided the wins against their Macreddin opponents that see New Ross face either Arklow or Wicklow in the last four.
Home advantage counted for little in the Barton Cup quarter-final between New Ross and Woodbrook, with both sides performing better on the road.
Davy Doran and Andrew Ryan, and Michael Ryan and Pat Whelan, claimed two great away wins that gave New Ross a great chance of advancing to the semis.
However, the tie was turned on its head by the great performances of the Woodbrook pairings in New Ross, where they won the two matches. Best wishes to Woodbrook for the remainder of the competition and congratulations to New Ross, and the team managers, James Roche and Brian Teague, for a great run to the last eight!
Next weekend sees two more teams take part in quarter-finals. Junior Cashin’s All-Ireland Fourball Trophy team meets Portarlington, whilst the Cullen Trophy team travels to Bray. Best wishes to all involved.
Elsewhere, Richie Aylward (18) claimed the final open week singles with a very good score of 38 points in testing conditions. He finished one ahead of John Kent (23), who bettered Lismore’s Eddie Fraher (19) on the countback.
The gross went to Mark O’Mahony with 28 points whilst the categories were won by John O’Connor (8, 35 points), Declan Doyle (12, 36 points) and Patsy Moore (22, 36 points). The competition was once again sponsored by James Kent of Alushield Windows & Doors.
The PTSB-sponsored Tuesday fourball was won by Ger Maher (14) and John Kent (22) with a handsome total of 38 points. Tommy Liston (7) and Francis Coughlan (17) took home Category A with 36 points, with Category B going the way of Eddie Kent (17) and Jack Murphy (14), also on 36 points. Thank you to PTSB New Ross for their continued support.
The Centenary Cup, sponsored by Mannion’s Pub, produced a very clear winner in Ger Maher (14) who rattled in a superb 66 to take home the silverware. Matthew Wall (14) finished in second with a 70, with Paul Goff (11) a further shot back in third place.
The gross was won by Michael Ryan with a tidy 71, and Donal Hosey (5, 73), Shane Whelan (11, 71) and Mick Malone (17,72) took home the category prizes. Thank you to Emmett Hall and Lisa Saunders of Mannion’s Pub for their continued support.
Next weekend sees another coveted piece of silverware on offer, as members will vie for honours in the Fleetwood Cup. There are tee-times available on both Saturday and Sunday.
TAGHMONSOCIETY
The society headed to Wexford with 42 players recently, with ominous looking clouds overhead, but thankfully the rain stayed away and everyone got in dry except for Tom Trinity who went fishing for mackerel in fresh water!
After many fags and heavy pulling on same, the accolades went to Brendan Doyle after a back nine countback when the top two finished on 37. He said afterwards that he wasn’t even watching his own score all day as he was getting so much entertainment out of the two Toms who were having a private grudge match for €10, the result of which was that one Tom won and the other Tom lost.
Congratulations to Brendan, as he was second last time out and in a run of form currently - one to watch out for next month maybe.

There were two winners of the twos club and €35 each goes to Leo Murphy and Anthony Wadding (you have enough to go to Blainroe now Anthony).
The prize-giving was carried out in Wexford Golf Club and the only thing bothering Brendan was that he is now cut three shots for next month’s Captain’s prize in New Ross on July 23. No amount of pleading will get those shots back in time! We are expecting a big turn-out for this Horse and Hound, Ballinaboola-sponsored event so get your reservations in early when contacted.
A special welcome to our newest and youngest member, Ryan Cashin, who is burning up each course he plays and beating the ould fella to boot. Keep it up young man as we’re loving it.
A big congratulations to a returning member, Jim McGee, after a few years’ absence who recently won the Captain’s prize in Wexford, and to a lesser extent, to Tom Furlong who made the cut of the last 27 in Enniscorthy at their Captain’s prize, only to be disqualified on a technicality not of his making. Oh what could have been!
Tom McGrath (Forest) won the lotto bonus ball as if he didn’t win enough on the day.
ROSSLARE
The Senior Cup team maintained its great record in Leinster when once again it came through the South East area finals in Enniscorthy. With 16 teams competing, they had to win four matches over the weekend and this they did in tremendous fashion.
On Saturday morning they overcame Wexford to win the first, and in the afternoon had a similar win over Blainroe. In the semi-final they beat Courtown, who surprisingly had eliminated Arklow, to set up a final against a very strong Kilkenny team.
Although the result was not as clearcut as the previous matches, they still had a 3 1/2 to 1 1/2 victory. Some great golf was played with most matches finishing under par.
The team was Gary Collins, Ian Lynch, Mark Mullen, Tony O’Leary, John Morris and Brendan Rossiter. The managers were Liam MacNamara and John McDonald.
Fresh from his endeavours with the Senior Cup team, Gary Collins (+3) produced one of the best-ever rounds in Rosslare in the open singles on Wednesday. He birdied the first and ninth to turn in 34 and then had six birdies on the back nine for 30 and an eight under par round of 64.
His 41 points was two ahead of the evergreen Dan Cash (8), with another Senior Cup man, Paul Murphy (scr.), third on the same score.

ROSSLARELADIES
Good luck to the Finn team which is playing against Wexford on July 9, and also best of luck to the Revive Active team which plays Cahir Park on Sunday, July 17. Support for these teams would be greatly appreciated.
The Junior cup team lost out narrowly in its quarter-final to Wexford at Bunclody on Sunday, June 26.
Our club Captain Keith Deacon’s prize to the ladies was due to be played on Tuesday, June 28, but due to inclement weather this has now been re-scheduled for Tuesday, July 5.
A sweepstake competition took place instead for the 16 players who braved the elements and the winners were: 1, Carmel Lonergan (27), 76 strokes; 2, Phyllis O’Farrell (31), 81 strokes.
A Junior fundraiser ladies’ and gents’ open singles competition is on Wednesday, July 6, and is sponsored by Stephen Hunt. Well done to John Brady who won the Leinster Boys. The Links Festival commences this week and there is open singles on Thursday, July 7, open fourball on July 8, and an open mixed team competition on July 9.
The final night of the ‘The Links Festival Singing Pubs’ competition takes place in Rosslare Golf Club on Saturday, July 9. A great night of entertainment is promised.
The ladies’ invitational fourball is on Tuesday, July 12, and this competition is sponsored by Kerlogue Nursing Home. Proceeds go to Windmill Therapeutic Centre.
WEXFORDLADIES
It was a great week for our teams with three wins out of three! All these teams are now through to semi-finals.
On Sunday both our Junior Cup team and Challenge Cup team won and on Monday our Minor Cup team beat Woodenbridge in Courtown.
The Junior Cup team which beat Rosslare featured Rachel O’Connor, Sheila Richardson, Carmel Murphy, Margaret Atkinson and Irene Bolger.
The Challenge Cup team which beat Blainroe comprised Susan Kelly, Deirdre Greer, Bernie Power, Mary Fallon and Mary Walsh.
Minor Cup team: Osnat Manning, Geraldine O’Brien, Breda Devoy, Eileen Kent and Theresa Morris. Well done to all!
Our lady Vice-Captain Una had a good week on the home competition front, coming in the prizes on Monday and Thursday.
Twenty-eight Seniors were playing on Monday and the results were: 1, Una Doherty (34), 27 points; 2, Theresa Kehoe (15), 26 points; 3, Noreen Power (35), 25 points; 4, Margaret Martin (24), 24 points.
On Thursday with wintery conditions, 58 people played. Tracy Ryan was leader for most of the day but Mary Cashe, who was in the last group out, pipped Tracy on the back nine with a wonderful score of 39 points.

We had a great turn-out for our annual Independence Day team event, sponsored by Brian McGarry’s Invesco. Over 50 teams of four teed off on Friday and Saturday.

WEXFORD
Last week’s winner of the Split the Pot draw was Richie Buggy. Members are asked to support this weekly draw which costs only €2 per play with proceeds going to course development.
There are only a few places left on the timesheet for the Crown Bar Pro-Am, so anybody interested should contact the Pro Shop.
Wednesday’s 14-hole open fourball was won by Tony Walsh and Pat Mahon with 36 points. In second place were Pat Harnett and Ray Heffernan on 34 points.
Friday’s singles competition was for places on a team in the forthcoming Crown Bar Pro-Am and the winners were Susan Kelly with 43 points, Mary B. O’Leary with 40 points and Brad Cohen on 38 points.
There was no male competition on Sunday as the day’s competition was the President’s prize to the ladies.
