GAA LOTTO

The St Fintan’s GAA lotto now stands at €3,300 and tickets can be purchased from local shops and the club grounds on Tuesday evenings from 8 p.m. and from club members at a cost of €1.50. FOREVER FIT

Dancefit Classes in Ballycogley continue on Mondays and Wednesdays at 7.30 p.m and Thursdays at 10 a.m. Forever Active 55+ continues on Mondays at 11.30 a.m., a more gentle exercise class to music. AFTERNOON TEA

Afternoon tea will be served on the lawn in Mullin’s garden, Mayglass on Sunday, July 10, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. (weather permitting). Donations will be gratefully appreciated towards the running costs of the churches. Hoping for a nice afternoon.

SUMMER CAMP

Mayglass Breakfast club and 2-3 supervision are joining with Eileen Rowe Health and Fitness to host a Summer camp at Mayglass NS on the following dates: July 5 to July 7, July 12 to July 14, August 2 to August 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily. TOMHAGGARD CENTRE

WoMen’s Shed continues on Mondays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., new members welcome. Reading Room open at same time for anyone who wants to borrow, swop or just browse.

SCOUTS NEWS

The end of year party and badge awards took place on Wednesday evening last, in glorious sunshine, at Tomhaggard social centre. Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Ventures received progression and skills badges earned during the year. Thank you to parents who helped out with Refreshments and tidy up. Meetings for beavers and cubs will resume in September while Scouts and Ventures continue till end of July as there’s preparation work to be done for Brumjam. All sections will take part in Kilmore Quay Seafood festival parade on July 14.

WAMBOREE

Last weekend 35th Wexford Kilmore Scouts played host to an unusual fundraising event in aid of the Syrian Refugee Crisis with over €2,200 raised.

This great idea was the brainwave of two 14-year-old scouts Josh and Haley. It was a wonderful weekend with everyone enjoying Kilmore hospitality, good weather, fun activities, all capped off by a surprise visit of Chief Scout Christy McCann and fantastic Campfire singing which could be heard all over the parish.

Thank you to the Quigley family who provided the site and services, Fr Denis Doyle and Parish, Mary Barrys, Murphys Daybreak, Pat Lambert, Bolgers Hardware, Brendan Hendrick, Jim Hurley, Elaine Walsh Sub Aqua Club, Clr Jim Moore, Chief Scout Christy McCann, Wexford Scout Co, and especially our own leaders, scouts, ventures and parents who all helped make a dream a reality.

ELECTED MAYOR

Congratulations to Mayglass man Frank Staples who was elected Mayor of Wexford at a Municipal District Council meeting on Tuesday evening of last week. Frank takes over the mantle from Our Lady’s Island man Ger Carthy and he is wished every success during his term of office. The St Fintan’s ladies and gents clubs extends huge congratulations to one of our finest members on his newly appointed role. A amazing distinction which is only reflective of the kind, sincere and diligent man Frank is.

It is a huge privilege to serve as Mayor and we have no doubt Frank will fulfil the role with the utmost of commitment, energy and enthusiasm. It is an extremely proud day for Frank, his wife Trish, his sons, his extended family, friends and neighbours, least not a super proud day for St Fintan’s GAA. Club and parish of Ballymore/Mayglass. We know Frank passionately believes in the power of community spirit and we look forward to supporting him over the coming year in this most honourable role. You better watch that chain though Frank, our Rose ‘Barbara’ is known to be fond of the bling.

We also extend congratulations to our good neighbour Ger Carthy, outgoing Mayor, on a fantastic job. It was a year of highs and lows for Wexford and Ger carried out his duties with true commitment, passion and sincerity.

ST FINTAN’S

St Fintan’s minors took to the field in Glynn-Barntown in the division three county quater final, the girls started well and were unlucky not to have put a couple of goals on the score sheet. Emma Sinnott got the first point off her left followed by an Rebecca Poppelwell point and one from center back Eimear Fahy, both sides went into the second half on three points each.

With some excellent defending from our backs once again, lead by captain Ciara Frayne the sides stayed level, with four minutes left, left back Tara Lambert made a surging run scoring an excellent point to put the Fintans ahead followed closely by points from Aisling Gouldson, Aoife Goldsmith and Eimear Fahy, final score St Fintan’s 0-7 Glynn/Barntown 0-3, well done girls a great team effort, St Fintans will now play Adamstown in the semi-final.

Well done to our under-10 girls on taking the spoils against Glynn at home in the recent past. Great team performance by all 20 two girls this evening with some excellent scores taken and superb defending and special mention to Rebecca who made some excellent saves in goal. Well done girls.

The club extends it most heartfelt sympathies to the Kelly family on the shocking and sudden passing of their beloved mother, Doris Kelly. A treasured icon in our club, Doris was and always will be, as they say, one in a million. As a mark of respect our club grounds will be closed for the next few days. Our thoughts and prayers are with Richard, John, Walter, Will and Ber, her son and daughters in law, her treasured grandchildren and extended family at this desperately sad time. GOODBYE DORIS

On Saturday last with heavy hearts we had to part company with one of our most loved. A lady who was, is and always will be, simply embedded in the very core of St Fintan’s GAA Club. Doris was a small lady with a mighty heart, a deeply kind and selfless soul, a jolly and vivacious spirit who forever gave herself to others. Her cherished family and late husband Watt were her whole entity, her every being.

Her beloved St Fintan’s came a close second though and for that our club was truly blessed. She was our steadfast rock on the sidelines, in hails of rain, gusty winds, glorious sunshine Doris was always there cheering on her green and yellow from the biggest of County Final games to the friendly under-six matches she was there. She was notably known for shouting at the ref, shouting at the players to get on with it.

Behind the scenes she made endless sandwiches, baked a trillion cakes, washed a trillion jerseys, sold ticket after ticket after ticket. Our club has lost a true legend. As the saying goes ‘The song may have ended but the melody will linger forever in our memories.’ Until the next time Dor, Naomh Fiontan Abu.

Robert Rowe chairman of the St Fintan’s delivered this piece at the grave side as our friend Doris was been laid to rest and Paddy McGuire PRO of the club said a few short words during her funeral mass on the fond memories we had of the great lady.

ALL BLACKS AFC

An Executive committee meeting will take place next Wednesday night, July 6, at 8 p.m. at the All Blacks AFC club house. Anyone interested in taking up a management role are invited to attend along with our existing managers. Fully trained positions with compulsory Gardaí Vetting and Child Protection Awareness courses. BALLYCOGLEY PLAYERS

The Ballycogley players drama group held a very lively and productive annual general meeting in Tomhaggard social centre during the past week. Outgoing chairman Paddy McGuire opened the meeting with a vote of sympathy with Breda Hayes on the death of her mother and aunt, Terence O’Byrne on the death of his uncle, Paddy McGuire on the death of his father, the death of former group member Paddy McCormack and the Kelly family on the death of their mother Doris who was one of the groups best supporters.

The meeting continued with secretary Rachel Murphy reading the minutes of last year’s meeting and also giving her report on the year just ended, treasurer Terence O’Byrne gave a detailed account on finanical matters. Paddy then gave his review of the year and thanked all the generous sponsors, supporters, Tomhaggard social centre and fellow groups for their help and he congratulated Bridge drama group on their All-Ireland success. He welcomed two new members Jack Allen and Josh Power and also welcomed back former member Chris Maddock.

He then thanked his fellow group members for their support, those involved in the fundraising which took place in Tomhaggard social centre, Kilmore NS, St Lenord’s, The Hideout and at Eric and Angela O’Byrnes house wher a tea party and auction was held. Breda Hayes director of the full lenght play, Brenda Sheehy Murphy, Fintan Murphy and Nick Hayes directors of the one-act plays.He thanked and congratulated the five members of the group of who had the great honour of representing the group at Aras an Uachtarain where they met and made a presentation to the President Michael D. Higgins and his wife Sabina Higgins.

The election of officers followed and Paddy was returned as chairman with Nick Hayes as Vice chairman, secretary Brenda Sheehy Murphy, Treasurer Terence O’Byrne and PRO Trish Boyce. Breda Hayes will direct the full lenght play for the coming season with Fintan and Vera Murphy together with Ellen Clooney directing the one acts.

Paddy closed the meeting by wishing the membership a very happy summer break. The group sends its congratulations to fellow members Fintan and Vera Murphy who celebrated 45 years of married life on Sunday last.

OPEN GARDEN

Please note the change of bus times to Wexford from Duncormick and Rathangan. On Wednesdays from July 6 the bus will leave Duncormick at 10.15 a.m., Rathangan at 10.25 a.m. and arrive in Wexford at 10.35/10.45, departing Wexford at 2.30 p.m. On Saturdays from July 2 the bus departs at 1.05 p.m. from Duncormick and Rathangan at 1.10 p.m., departing Wexford at 5 p.m. There is no booking required from the village - contact 053 9196276..

SHOW DATE

The Bannow/Rathangan Show takes place on Thursday, July 14, at Killag, Duncormick with all the usual attractions and some new ones this year. MUSIC FESTIVAL

The Tullicanna Music Festival takes place on Sunday, July 17, a Stafford’s of Tullicanna, performing on the day will be Mojo, Hot Ashpphalt, Cian McGovern, Jimmy Clooney and Friends. Music starts at 5 p.m., and there will be a barbecue and Colcannon, all proceeds from the day are going to Windmill Therapeutic Centre Wexford and Wexford Able/Disabled Club Clonard.
