DEATHS IN CROSSABEG

It was a sad week for many families in the Crossabeg area with the deaths of parishioners Betty Jordan and Lily Devine and former parishioner George Carley.

On Sunday, June 26, Betty Jordan (née Kavanagh) of Garrywilliam, Kyle, who was recovering in the Mater hospital Dublin from an operation took a turn for the worse and sadly lost her fight for life. Her death has devastated her family and a large circle of friends. Betty was married to John for over 50 years and reared a family of seven children, six girls and one boy.

She devoted herself to her family and in time was also a proud grandmother and great grandmother. Family meant everything to her but she also found time to help out those less fortunate than herself and was very generous with her time for community events and supporting fundraising activities. While caring for family, she also took time out with her sister and friends and enjoyed her game of bingo on a regular basis. She was aged 72 years.

Her remains reposed at her residence in Garrywilliam on Thursday afternoon and removal took place to Crossabeg church on Friday last for 11 a.m. Requiem Mass. Burial took place afterwards to the adjoining cemetery. She is survived by her husband John, daughters Jackie, Caroline, Esther, Lucy, Florrie and Diane, and son John, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sisters Nan (Murphy) Kathleen (Hayes) and Trish (Jordan) and brother Willie Kavanagh, sons-in-law, daughter-in-law, brothers and sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives and a large circle of friends to whom we offer our deepest sympathy.

ON MONDAY, June 27, another stalwart of the parish passed away. Elizabeth (Lily) Devine (née O’Mahoney) of Ballydicken, died peacefully at her residence in the presence of her family. Lily who would have turned 93 towards the end of the year had not had a good quality of life in the past year or so, but still enjoyed visits from family, friends and neighbours.

A native of Dublin, she spent many holidays in Crossabeg during her childhood and when she met and married James Devine, they decided to settle in Ballydicken where they reared son James and daughters Alice and Rhona. Lily took a keen interest in parish activities and helped out at fundraising events. She was a long time member of the church choir and also enjoyed a game of Whist. She supported sessions at Crossabeg community centre and Glynn for many years and her apple cake was always most welcome for the tea time break.

Her remains reposed at Kearneys funeral home in Selskar, Wexford on Wednesday afternoon with removal to Crossabeg at 7 p.m. Requiem Mass was celebrated on Thursday morning last at 11 a.m. with burial afterwards to the adjoining cemetery. She is survived by her son and daughters, son-inlaw Dave (Reck) grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sisters Mary (Liverpool) and Imelda (Dublin) nephews, nieces, relatives and friends to whom we offer our deepest sympathy.

THE DEATH occured on Tuesday, June 28, at his residence, Davitt Road North of George Carley and formerly of Ballyharron, Crossabeg. Husband of Monica, he is also survived by his sons Frank and George, daughters Kathleen, Helen and Jacinta, brothers Joe, Peter, Seamus, Ger, Fred and Wattie, and sister Mary, sons and daughters-inlaw, grandchildren, relatives and friends.

His remains reposed at his residence with removal to Rowe Street church for Requiem Mass at midday on Thursday last, followed by burial in Crossabeg cemetery. To his family and extended relatives and friends we offer our deepest sympathy. May they all rest in peace.
