Celebrating 15 years
MENAPIANS Athletic Club held its inaugural 5km road race recently and it proved a great success.
Jimmy O’Neill of Menapians said the club had decided to organise its first race to celebrate its 15th anniversary having being established in 2001.
The race which took in park, Carcur and Ferrycarrig Bridge was a challenging course but all 88 people who took part on the day were very pleased with it.
‘We had a lot of athletes taking part in the race and they were delighted with the course. It was a challenging course but they liked it. Everyone commented on how well things had gone.’
First place in the men’s section went to Andrew Connick, a native of Rosslare, who is currently running with a club in Ferrybank, Waterford, where he attends college. Second and third place were claimed by brothers Paul and Myles Gibbons respectively. Both men run with SBR in Ferns.
In the ladies section first place was won by Fiona Kehoe of Kilmore and she was followed home by her sister Sharon Kehoe. Third place went to Ann Sullivan of Menapians.
‘We had a good mix of participants on the day’, said Jimmy. ‘For our first year running a race we were very pleased with how it went. There was a great turnout and the feedback was very good.
‘Next year we hope to make it even bigger and better.’
