Killinick Garden Show to bloom
THERE will be plenty of colour on display at the sixth annual Killinick and District Garden Club show this September.
The show which will be held in the Irish Agricultural Museum in the grounds of Johnstown Castle takes place on the weekend of September 10 and 11.
A highlight of both budding and well seasoned gardeners this show combines the charm of a village fete with the added excitement of gardening competitions for young and old.
The show features some of the most important aspects of gardening such as growing foods, harvesting herbs, cut flowers, homemade preserves and flower arranging. Indeed, this is a show that anybody can take part in, with an open competition for all kinds of garden produce which is aimed at new gardeners who have never shown before.
New to the show this year is a harvest section for all the family to enter with opportunities for gathering wild flowers and edible fruits as well as plants from the garden.
Children also can enter on their own, with weird and wonderful displays of plant-art and smiley sunflowers. A number of local schools have been working with the organisers and many students have been busy planting and nurturing their sunflower seeds over the past number of months ready to exhibit them during the show. Last year a total of 22 children proudly displayed their large flowers and it is expected that this will be increase this year. There is also a competition for children to design their own garden which is expected to be very popular. As always the potato growing championships which is now in its third year should receive a large number of entries with gardeners keen to show off the fruits of their labour. Every year the Killinick and District Garden Club show proves to be an inspiration to new and experienced gardeners allowing green fingered new gardeners the opportunity to talk to other growers. Seasoned gardeners also get pick up tips from their colleagues and perhaps even branch out into a new area. The show also retains the festive atmosphere of an autumn harvest show and there will be something for everyone on the day. All entries must be brought to the museum on Saturday, September 10 from 9.30am – 1.30pm and the show will be open to the public all day on Sunday.
