Memory of Mena lives on at local fundraiser

THE memory of well known Wexford woman, the late Mena Dillon, lives on through her colleagues in Rocklands Service Station who recently organised a coffee morning to mark her one year anniversary.

Mena was only 58 when she passed away suddenly last year while on holidays in Tenerife.

Colleagues, family and friends of Mena gathered in Rocklands Service Station to remember the lady who was described as ‘rock solid’.

‘You could depend on her no matter what. She was always in work and would do anything for you at the drop of the hat,’ said Retail Manager at Rocklands Fidelma Bowe. ‘She was the backbone of the place and was so dependable.’

‘It was really nice to have her family there so that they could see that Mena is still in our hearts.’

The coffee morning also served as a fundraiser for the Hope Centre – a cause that Mena supported wholeheartedly. Slightly over €1,400 was raised on the day and this was recently presented to the centre.

‘We are absolutely delighted with how it went,’ said Fidelma. ‘It’s nice in this day and age if any business can give something back to the community. Local people also like to give to a local cause.’

After the event, Mena’s family and friends took home some of the balloons from the centre, which they later released in memory of Mena.

Along with being a reliable colleague and friend in Rocklands, Mena was also an active member of the residents committee in Corish Park where she lived. She was an active and well-respected member of Clonard Community Games. According to Fidelma, she is greatly missed both in her workplace and in the community.

‘We still have a lot of customers coming in every day to say that they are sorry to hear about Mena,’ she said. ‘It was really hard for a while. We were so used to seeing her there. She took her holidays every summer and we always expected her to come back and tell su all about it.’

To keep Mena’s memory alive, staff at Rocklands hope to hold a similar event in the service station on the same date each year.
