Cabo claim U-17 points
WEXFORD YOUTHS slipped to their second straight loss against hosts Cabinteely in the SSE Airtricity Under-17 Southern Elite Section on Sunday.
The Ferrycarrig Park boys lost a tough clash against unbeaten league leaders Cork City at home last time out but were hoping to bounce back with a victory in the capital.
There was very little between the sides in a fairly uneventful first-half. Neither team really got into their flow but Cabinteely did take the lead when a corner was bundled home.
Youths came out after the break a different side altogether. They created lots of chances with Kyle Kennedy and Adham Masoud not converting and Danny Doyle being pulled back when about to profit.
Just minutes after coming on as a substitute, Stephen Kearns headed Wexford level midway through the second-half. The goal came after brilliant work down the wing by Kyle Kennedy.
Wexford were still the better side as the game wore on but they were hit with a sucker punch just before the end when Cabinteely got in and slipped a dribbly effort just inside Adam Dempsey’s post.
It was particularly harsh on the centre-back paring of Paddy Barron and Cian Foley who were excellent at the heart of the defence all afternoon.
While it was another defeat for Wexford, the signs are encouraging. Eight of the starting eleven are under-age for next season, meaning Youths have plenty of talent in their ranks and they won’t exactly be starting from scratch for the 2017 season.
More immediate concern is the mini south-east El Clasico against Waterford United.
It’s currently scheduled for Ferrycarrig on Sunday at 2 p.m. but that is clashing with Wexford Youths Women’s Champions League match with Criuleni so a change is likely.
