NEWROSSSENIORS
We had a hectic schedule last week, starting off with our visit to Faithlegg on Tuesday where we enjoyed our game in well-nigh perfect conditions. Seven teams battled it out on the championship course for the bragging rights to be among the prize winners.
Scoring was as expected to be quite good considering the conditions but nevertheless playing on a strange course might lower the expectations of that happening somewhat, but we had a rude awakening in that regard.
The winning team of Patsy Farrell (19), Larry Shannon (21), Frank Boyle (22) and Jim ‘Dublin’ Ryan (23) spread-eagled the field, coming home in the number one spot by scoring a terrific total of 93 points.
Second place on 88 points went to Tony Harford (13), Aidan O’Connor (19), John F. Roche (19) and Tony Wallace (21). The third spot went to John Browne (13), Willie Naddy (20), Billy Redmond (21) and Les Jastrebski (25) with 87 points.
A three-man team composed of John Shalloe (5), Paddy Bennett (19) and Donie Cody (22) scored 85 points (79 + 6) and took fourth prize. Many thanks to Kathy in the office and the restaurant staff for looking after us so well - it was much appreciated by our travelling contingent.
Back on home soil last Thursday, again in perfect golfing conditions, we broke with our normal game format and opted for the popular champagne scramble team event. They were talking about Olympic records being shattered all week and we too had a new one set that is not likely to be beaten for a long, long time.
Our long-standing record for this type of competition was 105 points but that was well and truly shattered last week with a new record score being registered of 108 points.
Gelling well as a team, the quartet of Denis Kirwan (11), Dan Quigley (20), Larry Shannon (21) and Frank Boyle (21) achieved that magnificent total, helped in no small measure by three seven-pointers and an eight-pointer on holes seven, 15, 18 and eight respectively.
In second place equalling the old record with 105 points were Tim Doyle (14), Eamon Delaney (16), Pat Traynor (18) and Les Jastrebski (25). Third place on account of a better back nine (51/46) came John Hosey (14), John Fitzpatrick (19), Willie Naddy (19) and Martin Burke (25) with another good score of 101 points.
In all seven teams clocked up 100 points or more - not bad shooting for a crowd of veteran golfers.
All are reminded that next Thursday, August 25, the draw for teams is at 9.40 a.m. sharp in order to facilitate the Society group following. We stress once again that latecomers will not be facilitated as it upsets the draw and is unfair to those who arrive on time.
The Autumn Seniors Alliance outing takes place in New Ross on Monday, August 29, when big numbers from outside clubs are expected to take part. Home members needing a spot on the timesheet should contact Jamesie Murphy (051-421151 or 085-1846172) as soon as possible.
The 20-year celebration of the founding of New Ross Seniors is the trip to Ballykisteen in the first week of September when the New Ross course is closed. A good number have signed up for this great value package of only €149 which includes two nights’ B&B, two dinners and two rounds of golf - where would you get better?
Again, Jamesie Murphy is your contact at the above phone numbers as the cut-off point for would-be travellers is Friday, August 26.

Anthony Doyle, club Captain, presented his prize on Saturday. The course was in great condition, however, with a near gale force wind blowing the scoring proved very difficult. Strokeplay from the back tees in a tough wind tested the mettle of all competitors.

Ten years ago Enniscorthy’s mixed golf team were crowned All-Ireland champions in Clandeboye Golf Club, Conlig, Co. Down. Our team defeated Nenagh in the final from an entry list of 600 teams nationwide.
Their victory that day was an historic one as it was the first All-Ireland pennant won by our club in its 99-year history and perhaps provided the catalyst for our subsequent future All-Ireland successes.
The team managers were Anne Banville and Eamonn O’ Neill (R.I.P.). The teams that competed were: Stellah Sinnott and Willie Rackard (R.I.P.), Jennifer King and Cormac Martin, Julie McCarthy and Martin Sludds, Lori Whitney and Paul Gorby, Pauline Byrne and Michael Healy, Eimear McGrath and P.J. Murphy, Dee Kavanagh and Jimmy Hogan.
The team had a reunion in the clubhouse last Saturday and all were welcome. Anne Banville was the organiser in chief and was delighted to see everybody turn up to stir up old memories and reminisce about a monumental victory in the club’s history.
There was a slide show of photos from the time that had been long forgotten and the relevant people made the necessary speeches.
