GAA NEWS

The Shelmalier senior footballers completed the final match in the league stage of the championship on Saturday last when they took on Adamstown in Bellefield. With the result having no bearing on the final placings the game turned out to be an end to end encounter with the side’s level 1-9 to 0-12. Playing against a strong breeze the Shelmaliers got the first score when Glen Malone pointed in the third minute.

Adamstown took a two-point lead before corner forward Derek Walsh pointed from close range. A series of scoring by the Shels saw Derek Walsh, Aidan Murphy, Adam Whitmore and Simon Donohoe saw them lead by two points 0-8 to 0-6 at half time. Derek Walsh got his fourth point on the resumption with Adamstown slowly getting into the match. There were only two points between the sides as the game entered the final quarter. Derek Walsh extended the lead in the twentieth minute with Adamstown hitting back with the only goal of the game in the twenty-second minute to level the sides 1-8 to 0-11. The last 10 minutes was a hectic affair with many scoring chances for both sides, but both teams only succeeding in adding an additional point.

JUNIOR FOOTBALL

The Shelmalier junior footballers also completed the group stages of the championship when they took on Tara Rocks in Farmleigh on Sunday last. Stephen McGuire was off the mark for the Shels in the second minute with a well taken point and Chris Gordon was narrowly wide with a goal scoring change after five minutes. Goalie Aodhan Foley made a number of great saves as the game progressed and he was ably assisted in defence by Eoghan Fitzgerald, Cathal Gaule, Conor Hearne and Cian Manley to keep the Tara Rocks at bay on many occasions. A well worked move involving Kevin O’Leary and Eoin O’Leary saw Niall Murphy pointing from 30 yards with David Shiggins taking a wellplaced point from a free shortly afterwards. The second half saw a great improvement from the Shels team, however, Tara Rocks got their first goal in the tenth minute when a long ranger free deflected to the Shels net. The spirited Shels side were not deterred and when Paul McCleane and Chris Gordon combined they delivered the ball to full forward Kevin O’Leary who duly dispatched it to the Tara Rocks net. Niall Murphy and Stephen McGuire got the Shels last two points. Everyone in the club wishes Paul McCleane a speedy recovery from a knock he received during the game. The championship action returns to hurling over the coming weekend with final and important matches for both the senior and junior hurlers.

The senior hurlers take on the Rapparees in Wexford Park on Saturday next, August 27, at 3.30 p.m and the junior hurlers travel to Cushinstown the same day when they take on Gusserane at 6.30 p.m. Both teams are asking for your support.
