tune on the tin whistle. A fine musician, he was a member of the Castlebridge Quartet that played in dance halls for many years, particularly in the local area. He was also a long time member of the local choir in Crossabeg church and for many years was also a member of the local 55+ club. Requiem Mass was celebrated on Wednesday with burial afterwards to the adjoining cemetery. RIP.

COMMUNITY GAMES

The local Community Games were well represented at part two of the Community Games national festival of sport and cultural activities held at Athlone IT last weekend. Over the two-day festival, the area had an under-12 boys’ relay team in action. The team of Seán Rowley, Shane Doran, Jack Hennessy, Eamon Moran and sub Seán Milbourne came through their heat and semi-final to earn their place in the final on Sunday afternoon. Competition in most events it has to be said was of the highest standard and no less in the track and field events. The boys ran their hearts out and finished in fourth place and were awarded the Medallions.

Seán Rowley also competed in the 100m under-12 event where he finished in fourth place and earned the medallion. Darra Casey was the area competitor in the under-14 Hurdles event where he finished in third place and earned the bronze medal. Jack Forde was competing in the under-14 Shot Putt competition where he finished in a very respectable fifth place. Ryan Corrigan was the area competitor in the 100m under-14 event and he gave a good account of himself, coming through the heat and semi-final to the final, where he gave of his best but finished outside of the medal placings. Jacob English was competing in the 1500m under-16 event and just missed out on a place in the final. Very good overall performances all round.

ATHLETICS

After a busy and successful summer competing on the roads, Niall Sheil of St Killian’s athletic club switched his focus to the track last Sunday where he competed in the National Masters O35 1500m. Going in as the defending champion the pressure was on. The conditions were wet and blustery in what was considered one of the races of the day. In the large field of 19 athletes, the race had a distinctive championship feel with a slow two laps.

Going into the last 600m, Niall took control surging into the lead. He held this position heading into the last 100m but was overtaken in the home stretch to finish in a commendable third place from highly rated Paddy Hamilton of Slieve Gullion Rovers and Denis Coghlan of St Finbar’s Athletic Club. As always Niall’s coach, Pavel Kolesnikov, was present and has been integral in his achievements. Well done, Niall, on a great race.

ST PAUL’S AC

The track and field season came to a close for our athletes with the National League final. Emma Owens had a great day finishing in second in the hammer with a throw of 39.85m and went one better in the discus winning with 38.07m, just shy of a PB. Kieran Murphy also was throwing the discus finishing sixth with a throw of 28.53m. The points earned helped the county men’s and women’s teams into fourth and seventh respectively. Special mention to Shane and Peter Connick and Eamonn Owens who managed the teams over the three rounds. Well done to all. We hope as many people can make our road race on September 3 at 5 p.m. Sponsored by Rochefreight, the race takes place in Kilrane Village over a five mile AAI-approved course. Walkers and fun runners are very welcome with cash prizes as well as plenty of spot prizes up for grabs to all competitors. Post-race refreshments will be served in the Kilrane Inn. Thank you to the organising committee who looked after us so well with delicious food and refreshments and well done on organising such a brilliant weekend. Next year’s drama festival play is Lay Me Down Softly by Billy Roche. Set in rural Ireland in 1960s the play revolves around the colourful, seedy, burlesque world of Delaney’s Travelling Roadshow and its Boxing Academy. This humorous yet poignant play is vintage Roche brimming with all the passion and human foibles of the characters. Open auditions on Thursday, August 25, in Tomhaggard Social Centre at 8 p.m.
