O’Gorman nets all three goals

Taghmon-Camross topple OLI

- BRENDAN FURLONG in Cushinstown

ANOTHER STRONG performance from Taghmon-Camross saw them maintain their momentum as they held off a late Our Lady’s Island surge to eventually emerge with a three-point victory in this Top Oil Intermediate ‘A’ hurling championship Group A game at Cushinstown on Saturday.

Taghmon-Camross looked the stronger side all over the pitch with storming displays from Alan Nolan, Barry O’Gorman, Ian Carty, Darren Carty and Pierce Doyle which helped them take early command, and with the attack picking off scores they soon created daylight between themselves and their opponents.

However, one has to give credit to the Island side as, despite trailing by 3-10 to 1-5 entering the final quarter, Eddie Maloney’s charges showed tremendous fighting qualities, putting in a storming finish although goals from Brian Moore and Darragh Sinnott arrived too late to alter the result.

Now they must face into a relegation battle against Buffers Alley, but they should take some heart from their final quarter display which should give them confidence going into this crucial game.

Taghmon-Camross led by 0-5 to 0-1 at the end of the opening quarter after points from Pierce Doyle (two, one free), Ian Carty, Barry O’Gorman and Stephen O’Gorman, with John Walsh pointing a free in between for the opposition.

The only goal of the half arrived in the 30th minute when a lobbing ball from Stephen O’Gorman found its way to the net, giving his side a 1-7 to 0-2 interval lead.

Once Stephen O’Gorman goaled again within four minutes of the re-start, the game looked over, although the Island gave themselves a brief glimpse of hope with Dean Maloney finding the net from close range, reducing the deficit to 2-9 to 1-3 after 39 minutes.

Despite the deficit the Island kept battling, but once Stephen O’Gorman added a third goal at the end of the third quarter, pushing his side into a 3-9 to 1-5 lead, it now seemed damage limitation for the south county crew.

Two minutes from the end Brian Moore pulled a ground shot to the net, while in additional time Darragh Sinnott sent a ball across goal into the opposite corner of the net but it was too late to change the result.

Three minutes from the end both sides had a player red-carded following a brief melee, namely David O’Keeffe (Taghmon-Camross) and Eoin Kinsella (Our Lady’s Island).
