The Shelmalier junior footballers retained their championship status with a comprehensive 2-13 to 2-6 victory over Marshalstown in St Patrick’s park on Friday evening last.

Craig Parker and Stephen McGuire combined in the opening minutes to put their teams first score on the scoreboard, with further points coming from Kevin O’Leary and Craig Parker before Marshalstown hit back with a goal in the twentieth minute. Niall Murphy and Aodhan Foley added to the Shelmaliers score before Kevin O’Leary got his teams first goal just before half time.

The Shels led by a point at half time with additional scores coming from Craig Parker and Eoin O’Leary before Marshalstown got their second goal to level matters after 10 minutes in the second half. Scores from Denis Kelly, Neal Rossiter, Conor Hearne, Niall Murphy gave the Shels a deserving lead before Craig Parker fired home a penalty in the 20 fifth minute to give his side a deserving victory.

The junior hurlers will play Rosslare on Sunday next in Taghmon at 1.30 p.m in the junior hurling county quarter final and your support would be greatly appreciated.

The Shelmalier senior footballers were very unlucky when they exited the championship by the narrowest of margins going down on a scoreline of Shelmaliers 0-13 Glynn-Barntown 0-14. Playing with the wind the Shelmaliers took an early lead when Derek Walsh kicked over a free in the fifth minute. Further scores from Brian Malone and Derek Walsh saw the Shelmaliers lead by 0-6 to 0-3 at half time.

Glynn-Barntown came more into the game on the resumption and they trailed by a single point 0-9 to 0-8 after fifteen minutes. Strong play from Glynn-Barntown resulted in them leading by 0-14 to 0-9 with only five minutes remaining, however, a late rally by the Shelmalier men just came up short by a single point on full time.
