GRIEVING MOTHER’S PLEA TO GARDAI

Come down hard on drug dealers, says heartbroken Mary after death of Martin (33)

- By DAVID TUCKER

A HEARTBROKEN Wexford mother has appealed to gardaí to come down hard on drugs dealers in the town after her beloved son died of a suspected overdose.

Last Tuesday, 33-year-old Martin Morrisey Beary tragically died at his grandfather’s house in Belvedere Grove after his mother said he was given drugs in Wexford.

‘I am angry with the drug dealers. I hope there’s something that can be done,’ said Martin’s mother Mary Beary, pictured right with a photo of Martin.

THE heartbroken mother of a Wexford man whom she believes died from a drugs overdose has appealed to the Gardaí to come down hard on anyone dealing in drugs.

Martin Morrisey Beary, aged 33, died at his grandfather’s house in Belvedere Grove last Tuesday, the day after his mother says he took drugs at a Wexford town address.

‘It was drugs that killed him, drugs stopped his heart,’ said Martin’s grieving mother Mary, appealing to the gardai to crack down on drug dealing in Wexford.

Mary said that Martin was on the dole but gave money to a local drugs dealer because he was scared of him.

Martin was one of two young men found dead in Wexford last Tuesday. Gardai said there was nothing suspicious in either of the tragedies, both of which are being treated as sudden, unconnected deaths.

Mary Beary said she didn’t think Martin, a father of two, had taken heroin, but did not know exactly what had stopped his heart.

‘I don’t think any of the drug dealers have been in prison. The guards are investigating. I hope there’s something that can be done,’ she told this newspaper.

She said Martin had only been out of Rehab for three months and had been making good progress, although he was suffering from short term memory loss as a result of an earlier overdose.

‘He was back doing training and had put on weight. But he was very vulnerable, very easily led and preyed on. Despite this I am very shocked at what happened,’ said Mary, adding that she hadn’t been aware Martin was using drugs again or the extent of the problem. ‘I am angry with the drug dealers,’ she said. ‘But drugs are a big problem in Wexford. It’s unbelievable how many people are addicted,’ she said.

Mary said she personally had great faith which was sustaining her and ‘I know Martin’s at peace now’.

She described her late son as ‘ harmless’ and said that during his youth he played for Clonard and North End, loved soccer and ‘ loved to spend time in my brother’s shed watching sport’

Martin is sadly missed by his mother, brother Patrick, daughters Ashleigh and Sophie, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and the extended Beary family. His Funeral Mass took place at Clonard Church last Thursday, followed by burial in Crosstown Cemetery.
