On Sunday last the annual Intermedia­te Scratch Cup was played in Rosslare and attracted a big entry. The winner with a great score of 78 was Patrick Hanrick (11).

He had birdies at the third and 16th in halves of 40 and 38. He won by two shots from John Sinnott (11) who had halves of 40 which included birdies at the third and 12th. Padraic Dempsey (10) had two birdies to finish third on 83.

Liam Bennett (18) won the Nett on 70 beating J.J. Byrne (19) on the breakdown who in turn beat Alan Cuddihy (17) whose bad finish cost him.

Results: Wednesday Singles Stableford, CSS 35 - 1st: Paud O’Brien (4) 37 points; 2nd: Mark Fitzpatric­k (8) 36 points (B9); 3rd: Mark Mullen (+1) 36 points.

Congratula­tions to John Brady who has been selected on the six-man under-18 team to take part in the Jean Louis Dupont Trophy in the Czech Republic on September 14-17. There are two rounds of stroke play with the top 4 teams going head to head in match play. This is a great honour for John who is just gone 16 years old. The other five players are Kevin LeBlanc (The Island) Mark Power (Kilkenny) Alan Fahy (Dun Laoire) John Murphy (Kinsale) and Hugh O’Hare (Fortwillia­m).

Fixtures – Saturday, September 17, Ladies and Gents 4Ball; Sunday, September 18, Gents Singles. Both competitio­ns are open to visitors paying green fees.

Plans are being put together for a new and exciting Ryder Cup style competitio­n to be played on the same weekend as the cup itself. Competitio­n format and team selection are still being thrashed out. The word is, and this is not definite at this stage, that it will be parish against parish with 12 on a team.

We are running a fundraiser on Friday, September 16, starting at 9am in aid of the Local Branches of Guide Dogs for the Blind and Hospice Homecare. The time sheet is open and filling fast, get in quick for these very worthy causes.

Our Monday ladies and gents open singles is proving very popular judging by the number of participan­ts. The competitio­n is scheduled to be on almost every Monday until well into the winter months. Entry fee is €5 for members and €10 for visitors. Open to all membership categories. If you know of anyone who might be interested in this competitio­n then please bring them along. Where else would you get such great golfing facilities for €10? Next competitio­n is on October 3.

The next Gents Open Seniors will be on Thursday, October 13, and the sponsor is club Vice President Jim Hogan.

Vice Captain, Jack Murphy, scored a hole in one on the 12th much to his and everyone else’s amazement. Apparently there was a large bottle of brandy given to him by club President Eugene Doyle for this rare achievemen­t and anyone who congratula­tes him gets a nip. The word is that you are all to stop congratula­ting him as he wants to go home and polish it off himself.

The Kiltrea Pottery sponsored competitio­n held on Thursday, September 8, was won by Marie Dunphy on an inclement day which saw the wind and some heavy rain in the afternoon take its toll on the competitor­s. Charity Fundraiser - On Friday, September 16, we are holding a charity fundraiser in aid of Hospice Homecare and Irish Guide Dogs For The Blind. The competitio­n is open to golfers and non-golfers. The junior section is going from strength to strength with a significan­t number of youngsters having joined up lately. Is the next Leona or Rory amongst them? If you know of a youngster who might be interested then please let either Vice President Jim Hogan or Vice Captain Jack Murphy know.

Our new Brooklyn Restaurant is doing great business of late and the testimony is in the numbers of patrons. Excellent fare is on offer with great value quality meals available all day long. Rave reviews have been coming in about the quality and value of the food on offer in recent weeks.

The restaurant is open to everybody and not just for members. There are guided bus tours around the county based on the locations used in the Brooklyn film starting in Enniscorth­y town, heading out to locations used in the film and ending up in the Golf Club for refreshmen­ts. There is a fantastic new offer available to anyone thinking of starting to play golf available at E. G. C. We call it ‘give golf a try’. It is a ‘learn to play’ membership for just €150. For this you get three months membership which is available Monday to Friday.

A group clinic with our resident profession­al, Stephen Fitzpatric­k, on course mentoring with some of our ‘seasoned’ members, free use of golf clubs if you don’t have any for the clinic and special ‘learn to play’ competitio­ns.

There is a limited availabili­ty on numbers for this so act fast if you wish to avail of this new and innovative idea over the summer months. If you should then decide that you would like to join as a full member then there is no joining fee and we will deduct the €150 that you have already paid from your annual subscripti­on. In the club singles and club fourball competitio­ns we are now at the semi-final stages. All the first named were the winners. The quarter-final results in the singles were as follows -: Vincent Byrne v Paddy Mooney; James Morrissey v Andy Roche; Nicky Murphy v Frankie Morrissey and Joe Delaney v Paul Lynch. The results in the fourball competitio­n were as follows -: Andy Roche/Sam Greene v Willy Murphy/John Ryan; Joe Kelly/Nigel Cullen v Nicky Murphy/Joe Murphy; Eddie Balfe/Brian Balfe v George Leech/Nicholas Cahill and Ted Morrissey/ Sean Quirke v Frankie Morrissey/Paddy Fitzpatric­k.

All four semi-finals are to be finished by September 18 and the finals will be played on the same day.

Our senior members were to the fore again in Tuesday’s monthly open competitio­n which was won by Pat Berney (20) on the back 9 from Jim Roice (19), both with 40 points.

Category 0 - 9, Jim Turner (6) 36 points, Cat 10 - 18 Larry Byrne (11) 39 points, Cat 19 - 28 Martin Frehill (20) 39 points B9.

Wednesday’s 4-Ball was won by Paddy McGuire (20) and Damien O’Reilly (14) with 43 points from Sean Buckley (21) and Conor Morris (5) with 39 points.

Saturday saw the sixth and final round of the Talbot Collection sponsored Monthly medal, with Liam Flood (15) shooting a fantastic 67 to take the honours. Category 0 – 9; Declan Furlong (7) 73 (B6), Category 10 – 18; Nicky Murphy (10) 75, Category 19 – 28; Kevin Mitchell (23) 71, Gross; Sean Flood 78, Vets Nicky Lacey (17) 76.

The overall winner with the best four scores counting was Derek Cullen (7) with 290, followed closely by Jim Turner (6) with 291. Prizes will be presented later in the month. Sundays winner was Tom Foran (13) with 40 points, with Christy O’Gorman (11) 2nd on 39 points. Aaron McKeown (28) was third with 38 points. Tadgh Foran took gross with 27 points on back 9 and John O’Conor (13) won vets with 35 points.
