Norman Way signs begin to appear

-

THE Norman Way signs are currently being erected around the county and all signs point to Wexford’s historic past.

As part of Phase 1 of the project, signs will be erected at Lady’s Island, St Iberius Church, Tacumshane Windmill, St Catherine’s Church, Sigginstown Castle, Ballyboher Church, Tomhaggard, Ballyhealy Castle, Grange Church, and Kilmore Quay. The signs in New Ross will be the last of the group to go up and Senior Executive Planner with Wexford County Council Sonia Hunt said they will be erected within four weeks.

After the information signs are complete, road signage along the trail will be put in place. Hard standing will also be put down in Lady’s Island, Tacumshane, St Catherine’s and Tomhaggard.

Bike racks and benches have already been put in at all of the sites.

The expected completion date for phase one of the initiative is November 18.

Work is already underway on phase two of the project, which includes 20 more sites. Work will commence once Wexford County Council receives the go-ahead.

Speaking at the launch of the trail earlier this year, Cllr Tony Dempsey said:

‘I’d say if you looked at the DNA of many Wexford people, they are bound to be of Norman origin,’ he said. ‘We know about our history around World War II and of course,1916, but we aren’t as familiar with our Norman history. This will give people a chance to visit places that are not often recognised and reconnect with the past.’
