Car clocked at 149 km/h in 80 zone

A MOTORIST was recorded driving at a speed of 149 km per hour in an 80 km per hour zone in Cleariestown between October 14 and 21.

The speed, which was recorded on the R733 at Traceystown East, Cleariestown, was the highest speed detected in an 80 km/h zone in the country in the seven day period.

Meanwhile, county figures show that the higest speed recorded in a 50 km zone in Wexford was 72 km/h on the N80 at Newtownbarry Bunclody.

The R772 at Ballaghboy Gorey was where the highest speed in a 60 km zone was recorded in the county, with the driver going at 91 km/h.

The highest speed location in a 100 km/h zone in Wexford was the N11 Edermine Enniscorthy Wexford, where a motorist was recorded driving at 129 km/h.

The figures were released by Gardaí to coincide with National Slow Down Day last Friday – an initiative which saw An Garda Síochána conduct a major speed enforcement operation all across the country in a bid to reduce speed-related collisions and injuries.

The day involved high-visibility Garda activities in all 1,031 speed enforcement zones, with updates for motorists throughout the day.

Superintendent Aidan Reid of the Roads Policing Bureau said that ‘ the aim of Slow Down Day is to remind motorists the dangers of speeding, to increase compliance with speed limits and to deter them from driving at excessive speeds.’
