Hillwalking Club to trek back in time for 20th anniversary
WEXFORD Hillwalking and Mountaineering Club is preparing to celebrate its 20th anniversary with a get-together for past and present members in Whitford Hotel on November 19 at 8 pm.
Everyone associated with the club is invited along to the event which will feature a short talk on the highlights and milestones over the past two decades and a display of photographs and memorablia.
The club was founded in 1996 at the instigation of union official Michael Wall who discovered hillwaking while training for a fundraising Rahab trip to Kilimanjaro that year.
Senan O’ Reilly and the late Marian Gowan who was the first chairperson of the club were among those on the founding committee.
There are currently over 100 members in the club many of whom meet every Sunday from September to July to go hill-walking in the Blackstairs, Wicklow and Comeragh mountains, also venturing further afield on regular trips to hilly locations around the south-east, Donegal and Connemara as well as Wales and Scotland.
Members interested in rock climbing go on weekly Tuesday climbs in Rocklands on the Rosslare Road and also organise trips to other counties along with annual ventures in Spain over the past three years.
Anyone who has old photographs is asked to get in touch by emailing wexfordhillwalkingclub@gmail.com or telephoning 086 0848770.
‘We would love to hear from people who haven’t been in contact with the club for a while,’ said longstanding club member and one of the event organisers Colette Mahon.
