7 Things to do this Halloween

1 HORRIFYING HISTORIES: Those looking to entertain and educate their little monsters this spooky season should look no further than the Irish National Heritage Park, where the highly-anticipate­d Horrifying Histories event will run from October 27-30. The show gives a gruesome glance into some of history’s most horrible, horrifying and often hilarious people and events. Suitable for all ages, the show revels in all the nasty things that our ancestors used to like to do to themselves and each other. Prepare for a gruesome yet entertaini­ng afternoon of stories about people and things that you have only seen before in nightmares! It’s the perfect day out to help everyone in the family to get into the spirit of the Halloween season. The daily spooky shows, which are aimed at families, take place in the park at 4 p.m on each of the days. The cost is €5 per person and pre-booking through the Irish National Heritage Park is absolutely essential. This can be done through calling the park on 053 91 20733 or emailing info@inhp.com.

2 DARE TO SCARE AT WELLS HOUSE: The acclaimed Dare to Scare Halloween Tour runs at Wells House and Gardens from Tuesday, October 25, to Monday, October 31. Tickets are now on sale. Other mid-term activities include storytelli­ng with the Wells Witch on Saturday, October 29, and daily workshops from October 29 to November 4, on topics such as deadly dinosaurs, fabulous fairies, build a bear, and falconry. At 10.30 p.m. on Saturday, October 29, there’s an adults only event - ‘The Terror of the Lost Souls’ featuring a feast of goulash, and some unexpected dinner guests, and the Dare to Scare Tour. 3 Halloween disco at Geraldine O’Hanrahan’s: A kids Halloween disco and fancy dress party takes place at the Geraldine O’Hanrahan clubhouse in New Ross (just off the ring road) on Monday, October 31, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is €2 per child or €5 for a family. All children must be accompanie­d by an adult. This promises to be a great occasion and everyone is invited to go all out and wear spooktacul­ar costumes.

4 PLAY BARN FUN: A hair raisingly fun Halloween party and disco takes place at Ross Adventure Play Barn on the ring road in New Ross on Friday, October 28, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is €7.50 per child and there will be Disney characters for the children to play with, spot prizes and games for everyone to enjoy. Lots of great photograph opportunit­ies are in store for parents. Snacks and refreshmen­ts are available to purchase on the day.

5 MASQUERADE BALL: A magical evening of food, entertainm­ent and mystery awaits at a masquerade ball in the Riverbank House Hotel in aid of Irish Motor Neurone Disease on October 28. Organised by the staff at Equifax Wexford, the event will kick off at 7.30 p.m. with a champagne reception, followed by a four course meal. There will be music from The Gallivants and entertainm­ent by magician Andy James. Plenty of raffle prizes. Tickets €50/€450 for a table of ten.

6 CHAMBER OF HORRORS: Creepy characters and strange souls will be lurking around Crossabeg this Halloween as the Chamber of Horrors makes its return for another year. There will be guaranteed thrills and scares as soon as you enter the haunted house, which will be divided into a series of chambers oozing with ghosts and other spooky creatures. Set in the eerie rooms of the old Crossabeg community centre, it certainly is not for the faint-hearted! Come along if you dare on October 30 and 31 between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. Tickets cost €8 for adults and €4 for children. Booking is essential.

7 HALLOWEEN FAMILY FUN DAY: Join in on the holiday weekend fun at Gorey Town Park on Saturday, October 29, from 12 midday to 4 p.m. for A Very Gorey Halloween Family Fun Day. Events will include pumpkin carving demonstrat­ions, a puppet show, a treasure hunt, pony and trap rides, face painting, Giggles the clown, a constructi­ve waste workshop, a bloody bottle-flipping competitio­n, music, fun and games. There’s also a scarecrow competitio­n where primary school pupils can design and make their own scarecrow, with prizes for the most original. Enter in the Town Park from midday.
