WEXFORD’S WINTER WONDERLAND
THE countdown to Christmas officially began over the weekend as Santa rolled into Wexford to light up the town and get everyone in the spirit of things.
The drop in temperature didn’t deter the crowds of excited people, who flocked to the streets in hats and scarves to grab a good spot for the annual Christmas parade. Santa and his team of merry elves took the lead, winding his way through the narrow streets of Wexford while waving at young and old alike from his ornate sleigh. Though he was being followed close behind by Jack Frost on his icy throne, Santa got some help from Beauty and the Beast from the Wexford Pantomime Society and together, they were first to the Quay to switch on the lights for another year.
Santa teamed up with Mayor Frank Staples on the Quay. The pair shared the honours of flipping the switch and lighting up the town, before addressing the huge crowd that braved the cold for the occasion. Some music from the Wexford Pantomime Society also added to the festive cheer on the quay.
The parade and light ceremony marked the official start of the festive season in Wexford town. All of the Wexford Winterland attractions are now in full swing, including Wexford on Ice, Santa’s Train and the festive fairground at Selskar Square and the Quay. Organisers hope to get large crowds out to the Quay once again on December 22 when they attempt to beat two world records. Corner Boy will provide the backing track on the day.
The festivities will run in the town between now and January 8.
