Play promises to be fit for a king

-

KILMORE Variety Group is getting ready to hit the stage for their production of ‘ The King and I’ in the Dun Mhuire Theatre this December.

The show, which has a cast of over 70 people, will run on December 8, 9 and 10 at 7.30 p.m. Cast, family and friends came to the Stella Maris Centre last week when the play was officially launched by Cllr Jim Moore, who will play the role of Sir Edward in the production.

The display of costumes gave everyone a taste of the spectacular colours and decadence of the show.

Art teacher in Bridgetown College Trisha O’ Callaghan will be gracing the stage as the role of Anna – a teacher who in the 1800’s travelled to Siam to teach English to the King’s children and wives. Fintan O’Reilly of Mulrankin has been cast as The King of Siam and Bride Kinsella of Tomhaggard as his head wife, Lady Thiang. Other cast members include: Cian Bates as Crown Prince Chulalongkorn, Conor O’ Reilly as Louis, Sarah Doyle as Tuptim, Stephen Martin as Lun Tha, Peter McCarthy as Kralahome and Josh Power as Phra Alak. Ballycogley Players award winning actor Con Doyle will also join the cast in the role of Captain Orton.

‘ The King and I’ will be directed by Arthur McGauren, while his son Dave McGauren will serve as the music director. Eileen Creevey-McCarthy, music teacher in Bridgetown College and a long standing member of Kilmore Variety Group will take on the role of choreographer.

This will be the first major stage production by the Kilmore Variety Group which was formed more than 25 years ago and which has won several awards in Tops of the Town and in South East Tops competitions. Their most recent production was ‘Beauty and the Beast’, which brought huge crowds to Kilmore School hall in 2015 and involved 40 children from the local parish.

Tickets for the upcoming show are on sale from Josie Whelan at 087 7720129 and from the Dun Mhuire Theatre every Saturday between the hours of 3-6pm.
