ABI team gives fundraising a whirl
STAFF and clubhouse members at Acquired Brain Injury Ireland in Drinagh got on their bikes recently in an effort to raise awareness as well as some vital funds.
Over 50 people hopped in the saddle at their cycleathon including staff, clubhouse members, family members and various others from the locality. Mayor Frank Staples also gave the activity a whirl when he came to visit later in the afternoon.
‘It was absolutely fantastic. We had three bikes and cycled for a combined total of 24 hours. We had so many people that we had to cut the cycle time in half. Nobody wanted to get off the bikes!’ said Team Leader at the ABI clubhouse Marie Hore.
The event was the brainchild of clubhouse member Roisin Fortune – an avid cyclist who credits cycling as a key part of her treatment. Through her own experience, she got the ball rolling for the event, along with all of her fellow clubhouse members.
‘ They really took ownership of the event. Everyone got involved on the day,’ said Marie. ‘It really raised awareness of the fact that we are here and also taught people about what we do.’
Though the proceeds have yet to be counted, Marie said that the fundraising went extremely well.
On December 14, Acquired Brian Injury Ireland will hold their Christmas market in Drinagh, during which they will unveil their new pottery project entitled ‘Birds of a Feather’. This project was funded by Wexford County Council.
