Man is back in court days after receiving jail term

-

MICHAEL Murphy (43) of High Street in Taghmon was back in court a few days after receiving a prison sentence in Kilkenny.

A series of guilty pleas were entered on his appearance this time at the District Court sitting in Wexford last week to deal with some long-standing charges.

Details were given of Murphy’s offending:

In December of 2011, scrap metal was taken from its rightful owner in Campile. The metal was later recovered;

In February of 2012 he was found by landowner Joseph Kelly attempting to remove vintage mowing bars and ploughs at Kilgarvan in Taghmon. A gate was damaged on the same occasion;

In June of 2012 he called in a drunken state at the door of a woman residing by the New Line Road demanding a lift. The woman was scared and called gardaí who found him in the middle of the road on a rainy evening;

In August of 2012 he was involved in a two-vehicle collision and attempted to leave the scene at Aughermon. However he was brought back by the other driver. He was uninsured and disqualified at the time;

In March of 2014 he was one of three men who backed a 2004 Dublin-registered Toyota into the Wrights of Howth premises at Kilmore Quay and made off with scrap metal in the boot. He ran from the car when confronted by gardaí but was recognised.

The court was told that a six-month sentence was handed down to Murphy in Kilkenny the previous Thursday, on conviction for motor insurance and burglary offences.

The lawyer defending the father of five revealed that his client had been off the drink for a year and intended remaining sober. The accused had spent some time in the UK before being arrested in the Slough area and the court was told that he was more disorganised that actively evading justice.

The judge said he required time to consider probation and psychiatric reports, adjourning to December 13.
