Pupils lend a hand to furry friends

THIRD class children in Scoil Mhuire and their teacher Laura Connick decided to lend a paw to the WSPCA by organising a dog food collection for their furry friends.

Over 200 tins of dog food were donated to the cause last week, almost double the amount that the group had hoped for. The collection was the brainchild of self-confessed dog lover Laura, who decided to take action after she read a story in this paper about a badly injured Yorkshire Terrier in Castlebridge.

‘A few weeks ago I was reading the paper and to my horror I came across a little article about a dog that was trampled on as he hid beneath some leaves on Halloween night. This dog was one of the lucky ones as a group of children who were trick-or-treating found it and later brought it to the WSPCA. I am a dog lover having had the chance to have a dog from the age of six and when Brandy left our world we were delighted to take two rescue dogs from the WSPCA,’ explained the third class teacher. ‘I was speaking to my class in Scoil Mhuire about dogs, their dogs, how we should approach a dog, what they eat and where they sleep. We then decided to have a special whole school collection of dog food. Our aim was to collect 100 tins. The children of Scoil Mhuire Rosslare are extraordinary and very kind and within a week the box for the tins was bulging!’

While 100 of the tins were brought in by pupils and their parents, the remainder were donated by SuperValu Rosslare Harbour and Pettit’s SuperValu Wexford.

‘We have donated the tins to the WSPCA and we hope all the dogs of Wexford wag their tails this Christmas and enjoy tins of dog food,’ said Laura.
