Burke’s try seals Ross win

-

NEW ROSS firsts made the trip to Athboy on Sunday hoping to emulate the seconds who had been successful away versus Gorey on Saturday.

In fabulous weather conditions for rugby, David Crowdle continued the recent Ross propensity for scoring early when he crossed after seven minutes following some intricate backs inter-play. Paddy Delaney added the extras.

The next score didn’t happen until the 32nd minute when Delaney converted a penalty after Athboy indiscipline.

This seemed to sting Athboy into action, with a try being scored and converted after 34 minutes before Delaney was again accurate from the placed ball in the 38th minute.

On resumption, Athboy had the better of it and recovered a penalty after 45 minutes to leave the score at 13-10, and so it remained poised until the 61st minute when a great Ross scrum delivered the quick ball that the backs thrive on and Eanna Burke dotted down under the posts, with Delaney again adding the conversion.

This proved to be the final score at 20-10 and ensures that the New Ross men maintain the number one position in the league as the Christmas break approaches.

Meanwhile on Sunday, the Provincial Towns Cup draw took place in Wicklow R.F.C. and it has delivered a mouth-watering home fixture against divisional league colleagues Athy to be played in February.
