GAA CLUB NOTES

The local GAA club are holding a Christmas raffle with a first prize of €1000, second prize of firewood, third and fourth of €100 and fifth of a lunch for two in the Riverbank hotel.

Last week’s lotto numbers were 8, 17, 18 and 20. No jackpot or match-three winners. Lucky dips winners were Neville Fanning and Jim Kelly.

Hard luck to the under-21 footballers who lost out to the Shelmaliers in the Premier final played on Sunday last. In a tight game, Crossabeg-Ballymurn led 0-3 to 0-2 at half time having had the better start. Although the second half saw both teams working hard for possession, the Shels were more clinical in front of goal and out 0-8 to 0-4. The local team consisted of Ben Turner, Martin Redmond, Oisin Foley, Conor Gormley, Conor Barlow, David Kehoe, Eoin O’Connor, Paddy Devereux, Pádraig Foley, Conor Maddock, Robert Byrne, Ronan Devereux, Glen Murphy (0-4, four frees) Cormac O’Rourke and Oran Maddock. The subs were Shane Whelan for C. Gormely, Luke Redmond for D. Kehoe. James White, Bill Eviston, Sam Kelly, Evan Kinlough, Lorcan Leacy, Lorcan Cummins, Cathal Devereux, Robert Murphy.

Despite the disappointment, the team have had a good couple of years at under-21, winning Roinn one in 2014, doing the double at Premier level in 2015 and putting up a very good title defence this year. Thanks to the players and mentors for their hard work during the year.

The under-14 double winning team will be presented with their medals on Friday night next, December 9 at 8.30 p.m. in Ballymurn hall. Please give the lads your support and join in their celebrations.

ST KILLIAN’S AC NEWS

The Clonakilty half marathon took place on Sunday last in perfect conditions. This race has gone from strength to strength over the years and is a favourite for those who have competed. St Killian’s AC senior member Niall Sheil made the trip and his efforts were justified when he took the title with a winning margin of nearly seven minutes. It is great to see a St Killian’s athlete winning such a prestigious race.

Closer to home, St Killian’s were also well represented in the Waterford half marathon. Again ideal conditions which resulted in a fast race with great times. This race is another local favourite with over 1700 competitors. Brian O’Shaughnessy has been training hard and putting in the miles and it was great to see him come home in 41st place with a PB Great also to see Jay Kehoe back racing and in good shape and he was rewarded with a sub 90 minute finish.

The focus now turns to the county senior cross country championships in two weeks time and we hope that the club will have a team in action. Niall is defending his title and is in good shape but will have to be in tip top form to keep all his rivals behind him. We wish them all the very best of luck.
