FAMILY and friends have been deeply saddened by the death of Patrick Francis (Franny) French of Maudlintown who passed away in Knockeen Nursing Home following an illness which he fought courageously.

Franny who was 51 years old had been ill for approximately a year having been diagnosed with cancer. He received treatment in Cork University Hospital and St. Luke’s Hospital in Dublin.

A beloved son of the late Stanley and Clare French, Franny attended the Faythe primary school and CBS secondary school. In his 20’s, he went to Slough in England and worked on road construction and buildings sites, keeping in regular touch with his family.

He wrote a letter every week to his mother Clare, thoughtfully enclosing a little note for his younger sister Helen, and he always brought presents when he arrived home. He also spent a month in Florida around the same time.

He loved sport and played football with St. Mary’s GAA Club throughout his school years and up to his early twenties.

An avid reader, he was very knowledgeable on many subjects, particularly Irish history. He was also very talented at drawing, a hobby that he pursued throughout his life.

Franny loved socialising and music and played the tin whistle and the mouth organ, mostly for his own entertainment.

Everyone in Maudlintown knew Franny, from the youngest to the oldest. He was a familiar face on the green where he chatted to friends and passers-by. He was always warm-hearted and kind.

Franny is survived by his daughter Aisling; his brother Michael; his sisters Annette, Breda, Teresa, Christina and Helen; his grandson Cody (9); his brothers-in-law; sisters-inlaw; his nephews and nieces, and his extended family and many friends.

Burial took place in St. Ibar’s Cemetery, Crosstown following Requiem mass in Bride Street Church. The French family would like to thank Wexford Hospice Homecare and Knockeen Nursing Home for the professional care and kindness shown to Franny in his final days and also Brian Hogan of Maudlintown Pharmacy.
